My personal opinion on the matter is, I don't quite believe in an upper deity for two reasons.

First, if there really was an upper deity, why are there so many religion that all claim to be right, and go to war with each other over their principles?

Second, I believe that it is incorrect to ask the question of "why are we here and what is our purpose," which is what religion answers. Instead I believe that the question "who are we truly" must be asked and answered first. One more thing (IMO), assuming that we humans have an actual purpose is incredibly arrogant in and of itself.

I consider myself agnostic but only because I'm a very analytical person and I believe everything that exists must have proof of existence.

Aside from that, I look at history to explain some reasons as to why the idea of "Gods" or a "God" even came about.

In ancient civilizations, things happened that could not be explained. A flood occurred. The growing season was plagued by drought. A person dies from apparently nothing. In ancient civilizations, there was no way to explain or tell that hard rains upstream caused a flood, weather patterns change from year to year, or that cancer or a similar disease can cause death. Now we can as technology and science have allowed us to do so.

How did they explain it? A supreme deity, or multiple ones, oversee all that occurs on earth and they are responsible for things that happen. "If we do not please the Gods, we will suffer" was a phrase heard and written very often in these ancient civilizations. That was how they explained the flood, drought, or death.

I think these types of things still occur around the globe. Things happen that we can't explain so we blame it on a deity that we can't see, can't hear, and have no proof of existence. In reality, we probably haven't had this "thing" occur enough to be able to analyze and explain it.

All in all, many people find comfort in knowing that someone (or thing) is watching over them and helping them out. I am completely different. I feel that I am in control of my own life and the choices I make have an impact on my life. No deity is going to take that control away from me.

But this is just my view and feel free to combat my opinion. If you find any holes in my reasoning, lets talk about it.

I realized I had no faith. That was a few years ago. I'd been going through the motions, but that's it.
Then there's the whole thing where the christian god's name is used for murder, but both testaments of the bible teach what very few in power actually practice.

My primary reason for going with a non-religious label is that christian, in our culture, does NOT mean someone who follows the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, nor of those who came before him (while shrouded in window-dressing and embellishment over many generations of oral tradition--not to mention imaginitive translations--the same stuff is in the old testament). I think the way many christians think is causing much of the harm in the world--specifically our creation of good and evil.

My personal thinking is that it doesn't matter if there is a God or not. Let's check out some possibilities:
[*]There are hosts of angels, and just and kind God to judge me. If I live a life of peace and true to myself and others, I'll have no problems, hop into heaven.
[*]There is a God, and he's the royal bastard of some group. If I live a life of peace and true to myself and others, I won't be let in because my beliefs weren't JUST the right ones. I'll take limbo or Hell, thank you.
[*]There is a God, his religion is Mormon, and Hell is actually kinda neat. OK, more South Park, please.
[*]There is reincarnation. I'll stay at the same level of existence, or rise up.
[*]There is a return to some group of souls from all creation.
[*]There is a return to some group of souls from all creation, but also, due to the will of humans, there IS a heaven and hell. I'll be glad I didn't believe so much in them.
[*]There is no afterlife, beyond possibly being a historical remnant (ghost). I left a positive mark, which hopefully will offer one small step towards a better world.

Started when I was reading history books when I was maybe 8 or something. Saw that there were different religions all over the world therefore one of them cant be any more correct than the other, expecialy in the light of that religions come and go with time.

I think these days I'm pretty much in the agnostic camp, I spent the majority of my life as a very involved christian (I did a lot of bible study, preaching, etc.). But as I got older and had a chance to learn about other religions outside of my own I realized that perhaps things are'nt always as people make them appear to be.
