Ate Raw Chicken at TGI Fridays

My girlfriend and I went to TGI Fridays tonight. We ordered the boneless buffalo wings appetizer and found out after eating nearly all of them, that the chicken was raw. Even as we started eating our entrees, we continued eating the wings (which at this point we didn't know we had consumed raw chicken), while unknowingly cross contaminating with our fork, which we used to eat the raw wings. I pulled the waiter aside and showed him the problem. The manager came over, apologized, and offered to take the price of the appetizer ($4) off the bill. I accepted her apology but my girlfriend thinks I should have demanded the whole meal to be free. I ended up ordering dessert afterwards, but my girlfriend thinks I shouldn't have supported the restaraunt any further. I also ended up tipping normally despite them giving us raw chicken. I tipped because it wasn't the waiter's fault, but my girlfriend thinks that you should tip based on the whole dining experience, which I admit wasn't pleasant at all because we kept thinking of getting sick. The waiter didn't even apologize and he didn't seem to have cared at all, but I still figured it wasn't his fault the cook screwed up. So in my girlfriend's opinion, I should have demanded a free meal, I should not have ordered dessert, and I should not have tipped, and at the VERY least, they should have had enough sense to offer to replace our contaminated silverware.

What do you guys think? Is the girlfriend right?

You don't get sick from eating raw food. Raw chicken won't affect you unless it's tainted with salmanella. Frankly, in this day and age, you're more likely to win the lottery than eat tainted raw chicken.

Personally, I like a bit of pink in my chicken and pork, and I eat beef very rare. The taste is so much better. Dried out, overcooked meat sucks.

I ordered a burger at a nice steak restaurant once. Took a bite and it was the best burger I've ever tasted. I look down at it and the meat is completely raw. Just barely browned on the outside.

I told our waiter. The manager came over. He apologized profusely. A new order was placed in the front of the line and I had it in about 5 minutes. Our entire meal was free and all that jazz. I would happy with the treatment and would have been mad at anything less.

She's right. Had the entire meal been comped then tipping the waiter would have been acceptable. It's up to the wait staff to take care of the customer which they obviously didn't do, and when they don't it's up to management.

Don't forget...

Entirely raw or just partially cooked?

I eat stuff pretty rare and have never been sick from it - even steak tartare, which is entirely raw.

I would have accepted nothing less than a free meal.

No, she's not right. The manager did the right thing by giving you your money back for the appetizer. Also, the waiter has nothing to do with your food being raw. You did the right thing by letting the manager know. Perhaps you should file a complaint with the corporate office.

How did you both eat almost every wing without noticing it was raw?, was it covered in sauce? were you guys as hungry as wolverines coming out of hibernation?. Your GF is right though, the whole meal should have been comped at that point..

You'd be wrong. I DVR Kitchen Nightmares (along with The F Word and Hell's Kitchen) and have seen them all. I've seen all the Good Eats, Iron Chef (Japan), and Iron Chef America as well. I also DVR Anthony Bourdain, DD&D, Chopped, Top Chef, Next Food Network Star, and I can't wait for the Next Iron Chef which starts on Oct 4.

Check the stats. Today you're most likely to get salmanella from tainted vegetables than from a raw meat. That's because some farms will use poultry manure as a fertilizer on their vegetables and the shit is where salmanella comes from. Chicken (and other meats) is so highly processed today, including irradiation, that you're highly unlikely to get any illness from eating a raw piece.

Yes they were small, bite-sized boneless buffalo wings that were fried and covered on the outside. I was the one who found out by randomly cutting them open after most of them were consumed.

How is it possible for something that's fried to be entirely raw?

what the fuck?...were you drunk?

#1 there is no way it was "what you find in the supermarket"...if I am not mistaken Fridays deep fries their wings so they were cooked at least somewhat and not like you claim. Undercooked? *maybe*...raw uncooked?...no way.

#2 I have consumed under cooked chicken and unless you were stoned, drunk, scarfing them down like Homer Simpson or all of the above you would have definitely noticed. it is very rubbery and has a definite distinctive taste. You would not have even been able to bite through it and tear it off the bone. It would have had the texture of chewing gum when you ate it.

#3 if this is true (and I am leaning towards not) you are a moron for not standing up and walking out. That is totally unacceptable and you should have told the manager to shove his meager offer up his ass. I am the last person to return food, but I would raise hell about that.

But the bottom line here is I think you're full of shit.

your server did nothing wrong, but perhaps the manager should have been a little more generous than to offer such a slight discount. i'd write/call corporate to let them know of the situation, and they'll most likely send you vouchers for two free meals in the future. anyhow, sounds like you're gf is a real winner...
