I was looking for original oil paintings for sale by artist on the internets today, and I came across a vibrant world full of various levels of skill, and effort, put into the hundreds of pieces of 'art'.

I propose that we use this thread to post our own acquisitions of original works, critique and discuss them. Some criteria should be established, perhaps only signed works. Sound intriguing?

Universal answer no?

lol

I have 3 paintings coming in, all bought on Ebay. we can call it the trial run, and we'll see if it gets any more traction then.

The view count is almost alarming.

My parents bought about $10,000 worth of art right when they got married to decorate the house. Went to an art dealer and had them help them pick out some decent pieces that they liked.

Today they're worth $150,000 last I heard.

Art can be a really good investment if you do it right. Plus it looks good. You do have to insure it though and framing these pieces is not cheap.

All I've ever bought was souvenir art and sketches when I've traveled. It's fun but not oil paintings. You might want to double check your oil paintings too since for all I know you bought acrylic paintings or some other kind of fake. I myself have done that. Bought some art for $20 total in Africa and thought it was oil but a friend showed me that it wasn't. Doesn't matter since I wasn't buying it because it was oil but rather because they made good souvenirs.

For the most part investing in art is completely random. Your best bet is to invest in an already established contemporary artist in the hopes that he will die and the art will increase in value, but even that is a crapshoot as if he does not die and lives to produce thousands of pieces it is more likely that he will not be valued as highly in 10 years as he is now.

Buy art because you love it, not because you expect it to appreciate in value.

I lived with a pair of working artists for over a decade.
I have some nice pieces that I'll think about posting this weekend.

Even established artists do things like sign blank canvases and let anyone do anything with their signature already on it (Dali is known to have done this a lot).

I wouldn't be against people posting their stuff (sadly, I don't have any pictures of my stuff and it is all scattered with relatives from when I was joining the military; I basically gave away everything I had I didn't want to have to move). I've never owned anything by an establish artist, but that is probably because I have been able to paint my own stuff and grew up around a lot of artists (all of which were starving). Same with pictures, although some of the stuff is fairly famous. My father is friends with a guy who does movie stills and has some great prints from Grease and an amazing Jimi Hendrix print.
