The profit the retailer makes isn't very high though, I have a friend who works at one of those stores and on games there is only a $5 markup or less.

nope, you are wrong, one of my friends works at Circuit city so she can look it up in a database, she says the markup on games is not much of anything, maybe $5 to $10 at the most.

Cost basis at retail chains are adjusted (padded) to reflect store overhead many time, so actual cost is probably lower. Not by much, but lower still.
