"ATAPI Incompatible" on post <new system>

So I just built me a new system with the following components:

ECS IC780M mobo ( am2/am2+/am3 )
3GB of 1066 RAM
400GB Sata HD
IDE CD-Drive
9800GTX+ PCI-E 512MB card

Whenever I go to boot the system, it'll read the SATA HD;however, it won't recognize my CD/DVD drive in IDE, and gives me this error:

"ATAPI Incompatible, press f1 to continue"

Well, this is annoying because I cant install windows XP so it tries to boot to a clean HD ( obviously not working)

I've done the following: Removed jumper on CD drive, resetting cmos ( twice ), remove battery, and checked connections.

Any body help?

Sounds like the firmware on the CD drive is out of date. Check for an upgrade and if available update. Of course you will need another PC to be able to do that.

Try loading the BIOS "Default Settings". That solved a similar problem on a new build of mine last year. Yeah, you'd think that'd be the same as resetting the CMOS. And it might be. But it couldn't hurt to try it at this point.

TSCenter's suggestion of updating or re-flashing the BIOS might help, too.

I said fuck you system and went out and bought an SATA DVD-RW drive, since I needed to upgrade anyway. Will still be upgrading bios after windows 7 installs. Thanks!
