ATA66 controllers?

If you have a motherboard that does not support ATA66, is it possible to buy a pci thingy card that will make you be able to use it on that computer?

ok. I wasn't being specific because I wasn't sure about it... I went to the local computer shop and asked about a ata66 pci controller, and the guy was dumbly staring back at me saying "what?" .. he didn't know what I was talking about!... my god.

So the store doesn't carry ata66 controllers... jeez.

Also, he sells nothing but INTEL processors - NOTHING! I would understand if he didn't sell IDT or Cyrix.. but AMD?!? He thinks AMD are REALLY UNSTABLE... I have never seen an unstable AMD!

So he doesn't know what ata66 pci controllers are and he doesn't sell anything but Intel processors... yikes.

uhmm.... ?????? I have a Quantum 7200rpm ata/66 hdd. The HDD being ata66 has NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!!

Promise's Ultra66 controller is probably the best add on card to buy. I have not heard bad things about Abit's Hodrod66 controller either. I personally use the Promise model and can vouch for its reliability.

As for AMD, obviously the guy does not know his stuff but AMD was not always a pillar of CPU stability.

ata/66 is usually not worth it unless you have a bunch of ide devices. it will usually not make a difference on performance.

ATA66 cut my MCM2 loadup and ICQ loadup times by 1/2 and Win98 also.

Putting the drive downstairs on my Cyrix using ATA33 cut my boot time by 1/3. I want ATA66 w/my Duron.

I have the Epox EP-USB66 UATA66 card with USB hub build in, and it works good. I like it, but I had to toy with it when inserting it. Epox seemed to think that physical specifications for PCI cards was optional for this card. :| I can't complain about my Epox motherboard however.
