ATA Controller Card? Is it necessary?

Do I need a ATA controller card if I want "ATA 100 speeds" for my WD Cavier SE?

I alwayus assumed I just need the right IDE cable....and that works...
so is a controller card necessary?

If your motherboard IDE controllers are not ata100 capable, but your HDD is, then the answer to your question is yes. You also need to use an 80 wire IDE cable.

Im running an ATA/100 7200 RPM WD 40 gig HDD right now in my ATA/66 compatible motherboard and it works fine without any major performance decrease from a controller card (I used to have a ATA/100 controller, but I needed the PCI slot).
