I just switched an AbitBE6-II for an Abit SH6. Surprise,surprise, my HD had been running at ATA33 the whole time I was useing the old board.I am now trying to get the new board to run at 66. I didn't reformat when I switched and the HD was properly recognised( Qunatum Fireball LM 30gig ). The heads, cylinders etc. are right. I changed the jumper setting on the drive to cable select,checked that the blue connector on the 80pin cable was tight in IDE 1 slot,installed Intel Busmaster vers. 6.0,installed coresponding driver on primary IDE controller,changed BIOS setting on primary to PIO mode 4,thats it,--still no 66. Si Sandra benchmark 8230,66 mark should be 13000.Please help, bo
 
Try enabling DMA in win98, go to settings> control panel> system> Disk drives. Sectct you hardrive and right click for properties. On one of the settings the will be a tab with DMA enbled. Make sure the box is checked and then reboot.
 
I'm running ME and that's not an option under( settings) in disk drives anymore.DISCONNECT is checked and SYNC DATA TRANSFER IS CHECKED. Funny DMA is still an option under CDROM.
 
Before you even start talking about OS, the drive has to show up in the BIOS as an Ulra66. We're talking about hardware right?? What does the BIOS say when you are booting? Different boards report differently. It should say UDMA 4, ATA66, or something like that. If it says ATA33, or UDMA 2, the hardware is set to Ultra33. PIO 4 is a step below that. Be sure UDMA mode is set to auto in the bios. I dont have that board, so I couldn't tell you exactly where it is.
 
O-F, second boot screen PRI.MASTERDISK:LBA,ATA66,30022MB. I had it set to AUTO but that didn't work. I figured settin it to 4 might kick it in. Bo
 
Cool. If the BIOS reports ATA66, you are running UDMA66, ATA66, Ultra66, whatever you want to call it. DO NOT install the Intel IDE drivers. Oddly enough, the Microsoft ones work better. They always have, even dating back to socket 7 days. This is likely your problem. If you are just setting this up, start over, since its hard to get the Intel drivers out. Just do the Win98 install, and don't put the Intel IDE drivers in.
 
O-F I'm running ME now,clean install with ME update and full version of 98SE.Anand just reviewed this board (Abit SH6),and they used the Intell stuff. I didn't know that Microsoft even had a version. That's probably what was on here before I changed to the Intel. A whole bunch of new stuff installs automaticly with ME.Anyways that didn't work either. Intel is also the drivers that come on the mobo CD. If I can get Intel off, what is the name of the Microsoft Busmaster? Bo
 
OF, what I mean is is it just called Microsoft IDE controler? Is there a version number? I'm thinking maybe I can download it,delete the Intel,reboot, and run Micro.Excuse the spelling. bo
 
I'm reading thse threads and I think I should explain something. I switched mobos,but i went Abit to Abit. The OS and all my stuff stayed on the HD. When I booted the new board the first time it recognized the HD and I was in action. Since I switched from BX to 815E Windows ME installed a lot of new stuff,some of which was the HD controller. Since the HD was running at ATA 33 on the old board it must have kept the same settings for the new board. I'm trying to change the setting to 66 without reformating and haveing to reinstall all of the updated drivers and stuff. bo
 
Couple of things. Win98SE does not have native drivers for the 815 chipset. ME does. This is separate from the IDE drivers. All that new stuff that went in was the 815 support. Here is how you can tell if you are running the Intel or Microsoft drivers: When you look at the HD in device manager, does it show as a "generic type 47" or does it actually have the name of the drive...Quantum.... If its the generic one, its the MS driver, if its the descriptive one, its the Intel. The MS IDE driver will be installed with the OS. You don't have to put it in separately.
