ATA 66 lockup?

Greetings!
I have a problem that I cannot get an answer from from the companies that make the damn things:
I'm upgrading my parents crappy Compaq Presario 350mhz (5070 model I think).
I tried to add a Promise Ultra 66 card and that sweet Quantum 30 Gig ATA66 7200 from that buy.com deal.
Anyways, EVERY time I installed the card, the computer would boot up to the Win 98 (OS1) blue splash screen and would freeze cold.
Any ideas to get this baby running? I also considered "Ghosting" their original HD on another machine to that new drive and replace the original with it. The problem here: the new HD would not be on a 66 connector. Will this way work? (putting a 66 HD on a 33IDE-or worse- connector)??

I'd love some input on these problems because they are driving me NUTS. THANX!!!

Yeah, ATA 66 is backwards compatable, as long as you have a 40 pin ide connector, you only NEEd the 80 wire ribbon if you are going to ust the ATA 66 capability

Noprob, e-mail me if there any more probs, i built a few comps and have fixed my share of glitches, Later

OK, factor5 I have another one for you...
I'm getting an error when I try to see your profile to email ya...
anyways, here it goes...
I just set up a K6-2 500 system with a Gigabyte GA-5AX Ali Aladdin MB
I have a Promise ATA66 card too AND the MB has one ATA66 connector built-in on it...
Well, after installing everything on it, I noticed it takes FOREVER to startup.
In addition, my burner connected to the promise66 sometimes "acts stupid".
It will give me an occasional "drive not ready" or not eject when pushing the button.
Also, when I click "my computer", It takes a LONG time to show everything (the flashlight thing waves back-and-forth).
Here's the question: Is there a conflict between the Promise and my onboard 66???
Thanx! (again)

I dont think it is a conflict with your card and onboard ata66, what i think is that you are having irq conflicts with a video or sound card, go into system in control pannel then device manager in win95/88 i think if you hit properties for your whole system it will give you all the irq's, check to see if it is conflicting with any other cards if so go into your bios and you should be able to either change your ide controller card irq or the other cards irq, if not try taking that card out, and goof around, moving the controller from one slot to another, also mebbe try setting your drive to "cable select" when you do this the drive on the end of the cable is master and the drive in the middle of the cable is the slave, if that dont work, i am not really sure, i might be able to check, any more problems, email me at jbrush@sunwave.net, i am switching over to my other OS, i'll check my mail later tonight or tomorrow morning, later again.

Well, thanks to you Factor5, It WAS in fact an IRQ that was being shared. I noticed IRQ10 was shared by my modem, video card, AND sound card. Real cute. So I can change the BIOS? I really don't have any more PCI slots to move cards around so....
Oddly enough, despite the huge conflict, not one of the items in the device manager had the "!" thing...
Thanx again.
Any further input would be cool too.

yeah, no prob, you should be able to change the irq manually in the BIOS but first, take all the cards out except the controller and video card, then make sure they are on different irqs then your comp should run fine, add the next card, boot up check irq's and so on, if there are conflicts you go into your bios and change the irq of the slot # that the card is in to an irq that is not currently being used, Talk Later, cya
