ata 66 cable question

i just got an abit kt7 and the ata 66 cable that came with it has a little hole in it --> on the cable itself about a few inches away from the middle of the cable part a wire is missing, so there is a little rectangular hole in it. Is this normal? I tried out a quantum bigfoot (really old) on it and it worked just fine, but i'm wondering what would happen when i put in an ata/66 hard drive.
