ATA/133 controller card error

I bought an Ultra ATA/133 PCI controller card to unlock the full capacity of my Maxtor 250 GB HD, and after I installed the card, I turned my computer on and got an error at the boot-screen which says the controller card isn't being initialized. I bypassed the error at first to install the driver for the card anyway, but everytime I reboot I get the same error. I've tried downloading & installing Windows XP SP1 to address this problem, but it didn't fix it either. I've tried switching the controller card to a different PCI slot as well, but same error. The error reads exactly this: "ERROR... Expansion ROM not initialized - PCI Mass storage controller in SLOT 1... Bus:01, Device:08, Function:00" My computer's specs. are: HP Pavilion ['01], Intel Celeron 701 MHz, 320 MB RAM, Windows XP PRO.

I bought a Maxtor 160GB drive a few months ago. I think I have the same card as yours. I was never able to get the card to work. My nephew does this for a living and it couldn't get it to work either. Actually, that's not the whole story. I could get it to function under Windows 2000, but linux would not /could not recognize it. I installed/reinstalled both OS's a few times because of problems with this card. I then did some due diligence with google and noted that I wasn't alone in this.

I think Maxtor has some serious issues with their PCI cards, judging from what I found through google. I have a PCI card from WD with a 250 GB drive attached and it works fine for both Linux and Windows. It is a newer system, so I suppose it could be some conflicts with older hardware.

At any rate, I ended up just hooking everything to the old ATA/100 EIDE connector...
