At what time do domains expire?

A domain which is help by some stupid company in England has a domain which I'd like. The WHOIS search says that it expires today 17-JUN-05, but I still can't get it. Do I have to wait until Midnight GMT?

Anyone ever used the backorder option on godaddy with any luck (is it worth $18.95)?

Let's say a domain expires today 6/17/2005 you cannot register it the next day 6/18/2005.

Domain registrars usually have a hold period of at least 45 days before it's available for renewal.
