At what price will you buy an SSD?

I paid $356 I think for my 240GB Sandforce, so that wasn't bad at $1.48/GB. I can't remember what my previous Barefoot drives cost me. A few people in here are right though, you don't notice an earth shattering experience when you use one initially. Use it for a few months though and then go back to a platter drive, you'll pull your hair out. Works that way for most improvements though, small difference moving up the performance chain, HUGE difference coming back down. I remember when I first used a Razer Boomslang, I came from an MS Intellimouse Optical, it was nice but I wasn't blown away or anything. Time went by and it broke or who knows for what reason I went to use the Intellimouse again. I was horrified, Unreal Tournament was completely unplayable, I ordered another Boomslang pronto.

Yeah. While it's true that an SSD will improve your overall experience somewhat, I found the gaming mouse did far more in that regard. Going back to a regular laser mouse (let alone a ball mouse) would be painful. Keyboard's next on my list.

I paid 2.875$/GB for my intel G2 (230$ / 80GB) a year and a half ago, and I have no regrets.
Price needs to go down further for me to replace my laptop's single drive with one, and even lower for my file server.

It has to be less than $2 per GB for me to really consider it. I was hoping the Intel G3 300GB SSD would be priced under $500; as long as it stays under $550 it will be close enough. That would make a great software & gaming drive for me.

I've been thinking about picking up a 120gb one lately at about $2/gb. I would like more space, but I think 120gb will be enough for now, with a 1tb for storage.

No disagreement there, but parallel activities all having priorities make computer speed less important. Family life in particiular. So, when I need to have a long task performed on the PC, I simply go do something else more important on the overall scale. And yes, I am a veteran. US Army retired - 26 years of active duty.

I can vividly recall the impatience of my youth. 🙂

As far as speed goes, from the time I press the power button on my T510 laptop, it takes exactly 30 seconds to boot and load to the fingerprint scan or password feature. The speed to scan or type the PW would be the same for a SSD. Right? After the scan, it takes exactly 10 seconds to have Win 7 fully booted and loaded with all startup elements.

So, in order to determine value, exactly how many seconds does it take your SSD to fuilly boot and load Win 7? My total is 40 seconds. Is saving a few seconds a day worth $150?

well since you are a veteran and Corkyg- i have an ssd with your name on it. might not be new but at $0/GB i think you might give it an unbiased opinion - if you want it pm me.

I have gone through all of the postings. I see all the pros and the 'not so pros' of SSD technology. All the opinions are respectable and to be taken at their face value. BUT... i would like to add in here another ANGLE. that no one has mentioned yet: How much of the decision made by the 'early adaptors' of the SDD was based on
A. impulse buying or
B. 'have to have it" as opposed to logical reasons or
C. 'keeping up with the Joneses" or
D. 'feel good' needs?.
All legitimate reasons too, but far removed from the reasons being claimed by a large number of buyers.

I will start replacing all my mechanical drives WD Black and Hitachi when cost per GB lowers to around 75cts/GB.I still got left between 3 to 5 years of the warranty on all of them. Western Digital announced yesterday it bought Hitachi (at least the HDD manufacturing Division)

My current line is $1.5GB a Gig. I got my first SSD for that price (old Samsung off ebay in 2009), and my newest SSD at that price. I am trying to forget about that middle group of 30GB SSDs I bought for $100....
