Unless your drinking has consequences like you're missing work, your personal relationships are suffering or anything else it's not really a problem.

An addiction is defined by its consequences.

I think perhaps the dividing line is that of intention: Are you drinking because you want to be intoxicated, or do you simply enjoy a stout every night? I taste wines frequently, but my intention is never to become intoxicated; in fact, I stop well before that happens so that my senses aren't dulled.

Anyway, consider your intentions when you drink and I believe you'll have your answer.

Well, I like to enjoy a couple beers almost every day. But after those beers, it usually leads into a few mixed drinks, usually grey-goose/tonics. Then I'll move on to a few shots like lemon drops or Johnny Black. Thats usually what happens when I go out and have a few drinks. But there a times during the week when I will only have 1 or 2 beers for the day.

You should always be able to predict how many drinks you are going to have. You may have occasional nights when you are going to go "all out" (drink until you get drunk). This certainly isn't very healthy, but I don't think its unusual college behavior.

By the same token you should be able to say, "I'm going to have two beers and that's it." If you find yourself exceeding self-imposed limits, you definitely have an alcohol problem.

At what point does it matter?

I drink beer everyday. Am I an alcoholic? By many of the stringent measures used in this thread I'm a raging alcoholic.

You guys sound like thoes pamphlets they used to hand out in the grade school libraries. :D

This is where Im trying to go with this thread. Many people are telling me that I have a problem, I should slow down or stop drinking, etc. but I refuse to believe that I have a serious problem. I believe that it's typical college behavior and it's a phase. I dont expect to keep this behavior when I start a professional career.

You have to place your intentions in context. In college, social drinking often is "drinking to get drunk." I drank to the point of drunkenness many times in college, but I wouldn't consider my behavior alcoholic. I did not drink every night, nor did I let alcohol affect my schoolwork. Social drinking for the young working professional is a lot different than social drinking for the college student.

That said, the original poster is showing many classic signs of alcoholism, college student or not.

I don't consider it in context, but you are certainly allowed to do so. I still believe the foundation is that of intention, but at that point I guess it's just a matter of frequency. Certainly there are many who seek to become intoxicated, but only do so occasionally as you suggest.

I still believe that if more Americans had an appreciation for a quality beer that they wouldn't drink in such a gluttonous, wanton manner. If a beer, glass of wine, or something in between were something of respect to be consumed in small quantities even every night, then I see little room for such motivation to drink excessively.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

I used to drink excessivly in college(drunk everynight some weeks/months ;) ). But now that I have a job, I have been able to cut it down a lot. It helps to know that you are going to have to work for 9 hrs straight and being hungover that whole time is going to be hell. Enjoy it while you can.

I still drink at home like 1 beer or two probably weekends.

but in the past i have gone about three months or more of serious drinking starting around 6am, but that was all because of my job.

I don't think thats frequent enough to have a drinking problem. If you really mean a drink as one drink.

If a lot of people are telling you that you have a problem, and are honestly concerned for you, chances are they are right. Drinking in the morning is a sign of a problem, at least to me, because you need to be buzzed to deal with your day. Also, you said that it is affecting your classes because you don't want to go because you are hungover. How are you going to start a professional career if getting blitzed is more important than getting an education? I just graduated college, and I drank a lot, but I never let it affect my real purpose there. Getting drunk is really, really fun. I love it. But there are a lot of better things in life. You say that it's a phase and you can quit whenever you want. Try to do it for a month to prove to yourself that you can.

P.S. Your girlfriend will likely be very "appreciative" if you do this, as it sounds she is very concerned about you.

Look up Alcoholics Anonymous in the phone book and call to ask where a meeting is. Oh yeah and don't drink.

How can I not drink?

Simple: Don't buy anymore alcohol.
