At what point does casual drinking become a problem?

When can casual drinking be considered a problem? How much drinking is required to be considered as having an alcoholic problem?

Do you:

1) Drink alone?
2) Hide your drinking?
3) Frequently not know what you did the night before?
4) Frequently not know WHO you did the night before?
5) Feel that drinking is the only way to solve your problems?
6) Are you drinking right now?

when you drink more alcohol than water, and when you can manage to finish a crate/keg in a week or less by yourself

How often do you drink?
Do you normally drink to the point where you get drunk?
Have you ever blacked out from drinking?
Do you ever drink alone?
Do you ever drink to help "escape" your problems?

EDIT: M4H already has a good list

i think it becomes a problem when you can no longer stop on your own and only stop because you've passed out(or been arrested).

...so they say I might have a problem.
[finishes brushing his teeth, and polishes off a bottle of that
wonderful Duff]
Marge: [reading from a pamphlet entitled, "Is Your Spouse a Souse?"]
Homey, do you ever drink alone?
Homer: Does the Lord count as a person?
Marge: No.
Homer: Then yes.
Marge: Do you need a beer to fall asleep?
Homer: Thank you, that'd be nice.
Marge: Do you ever hide beer around the house?
Homer: Do I ever!
[fetches a beer from its hiding place in the toilet tank, and
takes a swig] Ahhhh.
Marge: Do you ever drink to escape from reality.
Homer: [looks in the mirror and imagines himself as a big muscular guy]
[to "Can-Can"] Duhh, duh duh duh duh duuh duuh, duh duh duh duh
duuh duuh, duh duh duh duh duh, duh duh duh duh...
Marge: Homey, I'd like you to do something for me.
Homer: You name it.
Marge: I want you to give up beer for a month.
Homer: You got it. No deer for a month.
Marge: Did you say beer, or deer?
Homer: .... Deer.

Id say I drink almost every day. I frequently drink to the point of being drunk. I have blacked out before. I often times "feel" the need to have a drink, especially during the happy hours of 4pm-7pm and late at night. I drink when I get stressed out. And it has been affecting my school lately because I wake up feeling horrible and decide to skip class or I'll go out one night and say to myself "Im only going to have 1 or 2 drinks" and I'll have a few more than that and come home and not be in the mood to do my work. I do occassionally drink by myself as well, but not much. Maybe a beer or two. My girlfriend seems to really be bothered with my drinking.

In all seriousness, you sound like you are in the beginning stages of alcoholism. You should seriously consider joining a support group and try and move away from that lifestyle.

I drink once a week, heavily. LIke friday night and thats it. Vodka shots, laughing.

Casual is like having a drink after work. A drink every day isn't very good IMO.

I think first we should define what you mean by drinking. One beer? One glass of wine? How much? I drink probably ~4oz of wine a night, and that's often by myself. I think perhaps the dividing line is that of intention: Are you drinking because you want to be intoxicated, or do you simply enjoy a stout every night? I taste wines frequently, but my intention is never to become intoxicated; in fact, I stop well before that happens so that my senses aren't dulled.

Anyway, consider your intentions when you drink and I believe you'll have your answer.

I'm 20.

I also don't need to drink, only drink more than 1 on weekends, and stopped drinking (cept for weekends) without any problem.

I know at least once a month, someone starts a thread about casual drinking, but I started this thread because I came home last night after some drinking and I called my girlfriend. And she started yapping at me like always about my drinking and I actually got frustrated with her and got off the phone angry. but I started thinking and she's not the only one who has considered me to have a drinking problem.

Well, I like to enjoy a couple beers almost every day. But after those beers, it usually leads into a few mixed drinks, usually grey-goose/tonics. Then I'll move on to a few shots like lemon drops or Johnny Black. Thats usually what happens when I go out and have a few drinks. But there a times during the week when I will only have 1 or 2 beers for the day.

You have to place your intentions in context. In college, social drinking often is "drinking to get drunk." I drank to the point of drunkenness many times in college, but I wouldn't consider my behavior alcoholic. I did not drink every night, nor did I let alcohol affect my schoolwork. Social drinking for the young working professional is a lot different than social drinking for the college student.

That said, the original poster is showing many classic signs of alcoholism, college student or not.
