At what point do you call the police?

Call the police. I wouldn't doubt that this mob started out similar to what you saw and escalated.

That's kind of what I was worried about - the escalation of the situation due to the gang mentality, they clearly thought they were invincible due to their numbers.

And no, they weren't pushing around anyone who seemed big and tough, but those that seemed like good victims.

As for Toronto police having bigger fish to fry, I don't agree, crime in Toronto is not that bad, I lived at Jane and Finch for 4 years and never had a problem at all, you just don't look for trouble and generally you don't get into it, unless you run into these idiots. Aside from the drug / gang activity up there, the local population is very friendly.

perhaps what i meant to say was that those fish are too small to fry.

they're just little bluegills stealing worms off of a hook. that's fair game in Lake Ontario

I would call after the second altercation.

If the man with the books would have been someone with more of an attitude, something serious might have transpired and people gotten hurt.

If that happened to me where I live (downtown in a Texas city), I would have absolutely felt justified in brandishing my concealed handgun. That means a call to the police.

That begs the question, what happens if one of them has a gun also? Different culture up here, but I see your point for sure.

if they were being that asshatted, they would have been showing off the gun as well, just for that effect.

That's mighty civilized of you.

in texas, they know better than to roll around attacking people randomly 😛

Portuguese area? Is this the part west of the Italian area or one major street North-west?

You're right about not seeing groups/punks around that area in daylight. Not really all that surprising though. This specific area has been home to more and more shootings lately. I'd like to thank the 50 bars/lounges that open to 3am.

Take a look at the history of crimes that occur on an annual basis in Texas and compare many of the details to that of other states. I looked this up one day to find out the real deal. After I gave it a thorough analysis, the conclusion is that regardless of how much Texas likes their guns it has not reduced crime in that state in comparison to other states.

Keep in mind that this does not mean I am against gun ownership. You need to do what you need to do to protect yourself, but just understand that carrying around a gun doesn't help prevent crimes as much as it helps you handle them when they occur for better or for worse.

Call them as soon as possible.
Cops have to witness and deal with some of the most disgusting disturbing stuff every day.
Any cop I've known really likes these calls, when they can make a difference right now for the public.

"this is 911, what is your emergency?"

"Hi, I am on xxxyyyzzz street. There is a gang of black teens, possibly armed, and they are about to assault a man. Please come quick"

is this around the dundas st. area? downtown toronto? huge portuguese population.. plus police are easy to find in toronto.....

As soon as you see something odd, call the police and report it...granted, in a large city the police probably won't respond except to emergencies, but you might get lucky and have a unit nearby.

If he pulls it against a weapon already drawn down on him, he's getting shot.
