At what point did it format?

Ok, so I used DBAN to do the 5-wipe thing on my Raptor. That wiped everything off of the drive. I installed Vista for the first time today. I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit OEM. When I put booted with the Vista CD in the drive, there were two options, the first I don't remember except for "EMS" or "ESM" or something with those three letters in it. The second was to press F8 for advanced options. I pressed F8 and it loaded a GUI. It asked me if I wanted to install Vista so I did. Then I got to a point where it listed all the hard drives on my system and under that list were a couple of buttons to refresh, advanced options, format, etc.. I chose my Raptor from the list, but the format button was still not activated / you couldn't press it. So I clicked on install. It then started copying files, expanding them then installing.

So, at what point did it format my Raptor? The whole installation process took less than 30 minutes. Does this sound right?

Interesting. Seems like it's using the "Quick Format" option that WindowsXP lets you choose when installing it (WindowsXP). I hope Vista's quick format is better than XP's. My system always seemed buggy when I did quick format instead of the full format.

I'm also amazed at how fast the whole installation process took compared to XP.

Because full formats are completely unnecessary almost every time. There's no correlation between any perceived "bugginess" and the type of format you did.

Here's an analogy.

Quickformat - lay tar, paint parking spots with white paint.

Full format - Lay tar, paint tar black by hand, and THEN paint the white lines. When the white paint dries, paint the areas inside the lines black again.

Either way, cars can park no problem.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous.

Next time, instead of being an ass, why not just try to answer the question?

doesnt vista basically just load an image onto the drive as opposed to copy files across like xp did?
Yes, a WIM file.

Ok, thanks for the explanation.

So Vista can put itself on a blank hard drive using an image file on its CD even without formatting the hard drive?

So that's a good thing right?

Only if you have never checked for bad sectors. If you know the drive is good it's a waste of time.

...if you haven't scanned for bad sectors in a while, or on a brand new drive, maybe. But you could just run Scandisk after you set up the install.

It's generally not needed. It CERTAINLY won't have anything to do with the stability of your installation unless your hard drive is already dying. In that case the full format might catch the bad sectors and mark them as unusable -- but then you should be replacing that drive ASAP.

If I wanted to be an ass I wouldn't have started my reply with "Sorry..."

Meh, semantics. I always hate it when people start a sentence like that as if prepending "Sorry, but" or "No offense, but" changes the meaning of the sentence. =)

Yeah. Definately just should have said "That's ridiculous" and been done with it. Keep it to the facts 🙂
