At what outside temp do you turn on your heat?

It's 44 degrees here (everyone knows degrees are more precise) and I have my heat on. Set at 66 in the house. It's only running a few times per hour for about 2 minutes or so.

What about you other homeowners...at what temp do you have to fire up the furnace?

Outside temp is meaningless. I turn on the heat when it gets down to about 66-67 degrees inside the house.

No idea. I usually layer up, then turn on the heat once the layers are no longer working.

Don't really have a exact temp to turn it on, but it has to be cold....

The heat is set at 48 degrees right now.

I haven't turned the heat on yet. When the interior temp hits about 54F is when I turn the heat on.

no clue based on temperature.

I turn my heat on when I'm not comfortable inside my apartment wearing pants and a long-sleeve shirt/sweater.

40's probably
It has dipped into the high 40, low 50 and I haven't needed heat. In a small apartment , between the refrigerator, pc, tv, stereo, etc they all generate quite a bit of heat.

When the inside temp is below 66 for heat and above 81 for cooling.

Heating is the cheapest as in Texas it takes a lot to get the inside temp below 66.

So far this year, no need to turn on the heat, although it was a little chilly this morning (~35 outside), but I got up and went to work. It got up to 73 so the inside temp is just right.

When it gets cold inside.

I don't actually have control over my heat beyond opening and closing the valves on my steam radiators though. The heat is controlled by the landlord via a centralized boiler. Usually have to keep them low to off - I'm at the top, so all the heat rises, and my segment of the building is almost above the boiler, so it can get really hot if the radiators are on anything other than low.

outside temp is not what I go by, its the temp inside. Once it drops below 60, I turn the heat on to about 65.

I love radiator heat. I wish I lived in an old place that had it.

when it hits 40 inside, we start using the wood burning stove. until then, nothing.

That's pretty hardcore. I thought I was unusual keeping the heat in the 50s :^D

I need to get some wood cut for my stove. I won't have enough for the winter, but it'll be nice on the colder days.

I like radiator heat over central air type heating. Unfortunately, it's steam heating and not closed-loop hot water heating. Steam is loud when it comes on with the damn hissing.

My apartment has so much residual heat that I don't expect to turn it on until sometime in January. Perhaps when it is consistently in the 30's outside. For now it hasn't really changed from 70f in roughly a month. Helps to have a small apartment at times :)

So long as the daytime temperature is in the mid 70s, I'm not turning on the heat. The windows will be cracked during the warm parts of the day, which will keep the house warm.
