Pft; we've got a 93 Explorer coming up on 250k. No tranny replacements, no engine replacements, no rad replacements, just occasional maintenance.

Now that I have a family, it's irresponsible to drive a car older then 5 years, so I'll be swapping them that often for now on.

We got stranded in our older but pristine 94 Volvo when the alternator belt broke. There in the middle of a busy street we had to get the kids out of their carseats and cross the road and then guy took pity on me and helped me push my car off the road. I kept thinking how stupid it was and how we could have been in a lot worse places when that happened.

3 reasons prompt me to sell my cars.

1. Someone offers me waaaay more then I paid for it to begin with in the first place, it gotta go.
2. I see someone selling a car I know I can buy for silly cheap, and resell latter for way more then I paid for it, I sell the only thing I know I can get rid of to afford to buy it, the cheap ass used car I am driving now.
3. When I dont do the above two, I kill my used car to death. But what comes into play here is age, make, and repairs needed to the car. if I can repair the older car for less then buying another cheap bomber in worse condition, I will drop in another motor or trans. But when it dies and #2 comes around, then I junk it and go buy #2 for under $1500, most likely though well under $800, I find cheap used, good cars very, very, easy. For some reason there are a lot of people who think when a car hits XXX miles or age its going to blow up soon. Not true, but its those people I like to buy a car off of because they like to just dump them when all they need is light work done to them, and go on for another 100K miles + without ever doing a damn thing else other then oil changes and such. So please people by all means, dump your 5 year old clunker cars that are about to die on you towards me, I will give you $200 for them, thats $100 more then the junk yard ;)

Im driving now a 1988 Lincoln Town Car with 33K original miles with no oil leaks, blow by, or rust of any kind. The body is in near mint condition along with the inside, and paid $1100 for it. It will not be going anywhere soon unless #1 happens. I love cars but never in love with just one car so much I have to keep it for ever. The chance of being able to pick up something else I wouldnt mind having, cheap, and then sell it later at a profit after I got bored of it, is what I been doing since I was 14 years old. This car I have now though is going to be the longest I have owned one car, its going on a year, and since I been driving I have never owned one car in just one year, more like 10-20 in a years time so I think my old age is either catching up on me, or I am too damn broke, I also dont go out near as much either, yeah that it, its cuse I havent gone out all that much to find the deals :D

i pushed my chevy stepside 4X4 to 190k, traded it in with 3 frame cracks, a dead #8 cylinder and a broken front drive shaft. i stopped driving my 80 cadillac at 102k miles so i could still sell it for a good dollar. my usual is to buy older vehicles, and i run them into the ground usually. my current truck has 111k on it, and ill run it till it dies. unless i can get a good trade offer, then ill start over again. i get attached to my vehicles, and dont generally let them go until i have to.

Why would you change cars every 5 years with a family? As long as you keep an eye on everything, do the regular things like oil changes and such, and have a AAA membership, you shouldn't have to worry about situations like that. If anything, you'll want to save as much money as possible for your family. Just my point of view though, don't mean to come off harsh.

I've always been taught to buy new and keep it for a very long time... my car has 195k miles (almost 196) and I really don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.

My Saab 95 was bought new and has something like 275K miles. So I felt that way too. As I said, this Volvo was in great working condition......had just had a routine service performed....we always kept it up....it's was just an aging belt. My Saab also overheated once on the freeway and it was cracked rubber tubing from age. And the starter died from age. As a single guy or married guy without kids, heck, I'd be fine......but I can't put my family in those unpredictable situations.

Costwise, once a car hits five years or so, the maintenance and repairs can come very close to adding up over the year into new car payments. So as far as the hit on your budget.....it's minimal. I'm also saving $50 a month in gas with my new Mazda3.

115k first car... trans died.. mx6. would have loved to still have it though.
90k something, camry... rear ended and declared totaled.
50k, mazda3... will drive till it falls apart on me. sadly, at the rate I'm going, it might only be another 5yrs.

Coming up on 125,000 km/ 78k miles on my 92 Accord.

My first car, and it's been babied by the previous owner - pristine condition for a car this age. I'm doing regular maintenance and nursing it along until it starts racking up major repair bills. Who knows when that will happen.

Ya that's about right. If my average monthly cost for repairs on the car exceeds what I would be paying if I financed another car then I get a new car. There is some flexibility though in the case where the car is becoming such a headache that I would rather increase my monthly expenditures than deal with the trouble.

I keep mine 6 months to a year . I get bored with them quick. Then again, they are all 100k+ mile cars, all for around 500 bucks each :).

Well, I'm past the 300 mark now and hoping to get to 325 before I'm forced to get a car. Bought the car around 265.
