I remember going to use the restroom alone since I was 7. Do you guys still go with your kids to the bathrooms when they are at school?

That is a piss-poor analogy.

;)

(Schools are not "public" like restaurants and casinos.)

I prefer to avoid unnecessary risks, especially when it comes to my children.

It is not like I keep my kids completely sheltered at home under my watchful eye: My daughter just returned from a week of sleep-away camp. Prior to that she went on a two-week RV trip with my in-laws and my son is currently on a 3-day RV trip with my in-laws.

Crossing the street by themselves is unnecessary
Choosing their own clothes to wear is unnecessary
Riding a bike is unnecessary
Handling money is unnecessary

I guess we just differ in our definitions.

You think that bad stuff in bathrooms started happening only recently? It has ALWAYS happened. The only difference is that now things make national headlines.

I never went into a public bathroom with my mom unless she was changing my diaper. She would always wait outside for me. I never knew a child that went into the bathroom with their parents unless they weren't potty trained. You cannot tell me this world was as sick back then as it is now. It is worse.

Even potty-trained children sometimes need help with their clothing or wiping. Also, strange bathrooms can be scary to a kid.

It depends...if there is a pedobear warning sign above the bathrooms I suggest you go in with them. ;)

And you've come to this conclusion because...oh yeah, because you hear the stories on the news. Crimes against kids have ALWAYS happened and always will happen. I'll argue that conditions are much BETTER now, mostly because of public awareness. If you think the world is a much sicker place than it was in the past then you just don't know much about human history.

Oh, and I never went in to a public restroom with my mother, either.

You're right. A child could never be harmed doing any of the things I mentioned.

I would bet the odds of a child being raped or murdered while doing those things are smaller than the odds of that happening while unsupervised in a public bathroom.

Do you disagree?

The boy is 9. I stay aware if someone else goes in and his total time gone until he gets back.

Edit: Most mens bathrooms are disgusting and I wouldn't want my daughter (don't have one) to have to use one. But if there's an emergency, what are you going to do?

Womens bathrooms are disgusting as well.

Yes, I do disagree and I suspect the statistics would bear me out. Unless you view rape and murder as worse than being dead.

You have heard of a child being raped or murdered by a stranger while (not after) crossing the street, choosing their own clothes to wear, riding a bike and handling money?

I call shens.

They were meant to be silly. MotionMan was going on about unnecessary risk and I listed a few things that no one would dream of keeping their kids from doing but could be sources of unnecessary risk.

MotionMan I'm confused, does your concern for rape and murder begin and end with your kid crossing the threshold of any public bathroom or just when they're actually using the toilet because your literal conceptualizing has left me unsure.

Tell me, have more kids been killed on the street riding bicycles or using public bathrooms?

My concern for rape and murder is ongoing. It is heightened when I am responsible for supervising my children and they leave my view.

Tell me, have more kids been killed on the street riding bicycles or using public bathrooms?

Are you trolling, I mean, talking about supervised or unsupervised children?

There was a thread some time ago that said the same thing. Now, it's a moot point since the kid is going by himself but my conviction on nastiness convinced the wife to take him when we were in public. Win for me.:D

My daughter was 4 or 5 when I started sending her into the bathroom by herself.
