At what age did you really started working?

As in earning a legitimate income. Seeing a lot of kids nowadays don't know what real responsibilities are, they think high school apparently will go on forever, I'm wondering when will they ever learn work ethics.

Granted I did not have an actual job until I was 18, but I did work with the family businesses and understood the value of money, learned work ethics and got to know the consequences of potential failures. I think the problems with kids are that they don't realize what failures can lead them to later on, and that their parents are failing them at instilling these disciplines.

I think another problem that's attributed to these problems are the kids don't have any self respect, or are too complacent. Anybody feel the same way? When did you started working? If you have kids, what have you done to prepare them?

First job at 12 (roller skating rink)
First office job at 15 (receptionist/office grunt)
First non-family office job at 18 (real estate appraisal assistant)
First corporate job at 19 (recruiting assistant)

Note: roller skating rink was not a family job.

I had a real job starting the summer before my Sr year of high school and worked there through four years of college. Then I worked there full time for two years after college. Problem is, thanks to low pay (decent but not enough) and high cost of living I still have yet to live on my own.

I had a summer job at the age of 15 building computers, that's where I got most of my knowledge from.

edit: time warp w00t 😀

I got my first "job" at 16 as a dishwasher working 15 hours a week.

My first REAL job was working a six month stint as a QA engineer for a now defunct .com when I was 21. It was supposed to be a college internship, but it was more like a 50 hour a week full time position.

my first real job was when i was 18 at Taco Bell.

Before that I worked in the summer mowing, painting rent houses that my grandfather owned.

Started doing that when i was 14.

19. Was a bookkeeper for a gas station company. Had to manage finances for several stations, reconcile inventory, pick up documents, data entry stuff, etc. It was 9 hours day, 6 days a week.

14! Right on my birthday I walked 1/2 mile into unknown territory and got my Work Permit. Got a job at the Bronx Zoo that weekend. It was my first job ever.

Today, I work right across the street from the Bronx Zoo. 🙂

I started mowing lawns at 10 y/o. 😀

Joined the military at 18. First "real" job there. :Q

My 2 sons now are 23 and 20 and have been working since they were 16. They both still live at home and go to college under the condition that as long as the wheels of progress in your life are moving forward you are more then welcome to stay here rent free (but you'll still help out with chores too). If the wheels stop and you decide to become a bum, then it's time to GTFO.

Sweet. I wouldn't mind working at a zoo, unless it's like cleaning the cages while monkeys fling poo at you or something. IF a monkey flung poo at me, he would find a knife in his back that night. Monkey bastards. Who's curious now, George? Who's curious now!?!?!
