At What Age Can You Leave Your Child Alone

Do you have someone who can drop in and check on her from time to time?

I guess it comes down to how mature the child is and how much you trust him/her.

12 or 13. 16 is WAY too old to not have stayed home alone before.

There's a difference between a couple hours and the whole weekend

And the difference is what, aside from any potential legal issues? As long as they are reachable and leave adequate provisions it seems like basically the same thing to me.

Whey then are legally adults, otherwise it is considered negligence if not abandonment.

wrong.

http://www2.nccic.org/poptopics/homealone.html

What is lack of supervision?
Illinois law defines a neglected minor, in part, as "any minor under the age of 14 years whose parent or other person responsible for the minor's welfare leaves the minor without supervision for an unreasonable period of time without regard for the mental or physical health, safety or welfare of that minor."

14 IS NOT a adult

also froma link in it. "your child should be showing signs of accepting the responsibility and being aware of the needs of others and should be able to consider alternatives and make decisions independently. Children who are able to get ready for school on time, solve problems on their own, complete homework and household chores with a minimum of supervision, remember to tell you where they are going and when they will be back are demonstrating some of the skills they need to care for themselves. For many children these abilities begin to appear between the ages of 10-12."

so again it is NOT against the law to leave a child of 15-16 home ALONE and is NOT neglect.

My parents started leaving me home since I was around 9 or 10 and I was fine with it. Cooked and did dishes on my own. It wasn't to tough.

From the word document you are quoting from

Parents are legally responsible for their children?s welfare until they reach adulthood. Part of caring for children is providing adequate supervision. Under some circumstances a parent can be charged with neglect for leaving children unattended.

The problem is really the law is not clearly defined, leaving room for a wide range of interpretation.

Wow, seriously? You're worried about leaving a 16 year old home alone for a weekend?

Do you still hold her hand all the time?

Do you still do her laundry and clean her room for her, too? Do you wipe her nose when she sneezes? Can she watch PG13 rated movies yet?

its clear enough to say it is NOT child abondonment or neglect. leaving a 16 yr old home alone for the weekend is fine according to what i linked. IF the child is mentally and physically able to take care of themselvs

I'd trust a 12-13 year old a lot more than a 16 year old personally.

If the kid is competant enough to feed itself, then what's the big f'n deal?

16 years old..

Just image that your kid having a Gang Bang party, when you leave the house for long period..

You'll never leave her over night..

if you are worried that they will have a Gang bang then odds are she is already a slut so why worry about it.

Because they can stain the curtains, when they guys start wiping their dongs with it..

Cripes, at 16? Of course. I'd say 12-13 would be fine for a weekend, as long as you make sure you set everything up to be easy. You know, leave enough money to order pizza a couple times, put a bunch of important numbers by the phone, leave some prepared food in the fridge, ready to microwave... easy. She'll be fine. You should probably call at least once a night to make sure things are going smoothly too.

Hey nothin wrong with an Air Tight Party!

I was left home alone for a couple days when I was 10-12. Couldn't get into much trouble. I had food that was either leftovers or microwavable and my weekend movies from blockbuster. Good to go.
