What's easier and faster is different for everyone. You can be just as efficient with Windows 8 if not more so than Windows 7.

All that being said, you are entitled to your own thoughts, feelings and opinion.

LOL So you are saying if two activities are compared side by side you cannot tell which is faster and/or easier?

Many things are not as efficient in Windows 8. How do you sleep your computer in 8? 7 Win - right arrow - space bar takes less than 0.5s. I never shutdown or i would have that some stroke for shutdown.

How do you open a specific area of control panel, say mouse settings? 7 Start - mou - enter. 8 is start - mouse - down arrow - enter if i remember correctly the metro just isnt optimized well enough

Yes, I am saying that. It all depends on the user.

For the most part, you can stay out of metro. But not totally... it may grow on me, and there will be startmenu replacements.

its not only that, its the jarring move back when you have to use the start menu or the charms to do some simple. Since the start search in vista, I have 90% of the time just hit winkey, and started typing the program.

Doing that in win8 is really annoying, have to go to startmenu fullscreen or the search charm on the right. not as fast or intuitive

I was confused as to how the navigation worked. I think it would be neat if Win 8 had some kind of hints like they use in some games to get you use to how it works.

You just move the mouse to one of the corners. The top right or bottom right will open the side menu the square with the cross cut lines is like a start button that takes you to the metro screen. Then the top left corner goes to the desktop and the bottom left corner goes to metro or start.

If you dont particualarly care to use the metro screen as the default you can change the default to the desktop. Move the Desktop App to the top left and it will go to the desktop when you log on.

On the desktop you can put shortcuts by default to an onscreen keypad, the control panel, and also to windows explorer. Then there is some kind of list of most frequently used links that you can use to jump to certain webpages.

On the Microsoft windows 8 blog You may find a list of shortcuts. They put an awful lot of shortcuts that use the Windows key. Darn Microsoft. My keyboard does not have a windows key? I have been using the same keyboard since since I had an IBM Pent 133???

Good luck.

No you don't. Hitting windows key and starting to type opens search. Unless something has been updated or changed.

I tried the consumer preview and the latest release, I hated both.

But I will buy the $40 and hang onto it for a future install.

I've tried it, just can't wrap my head around how even to do the simpliest task on it. I'm figuring that it will just click one day and I will then appreciate it. Until then, I am very unexcited about this release.

Although I said no in the poll I will consider getting it if the gaming performance with Windows 8 is better than Windows 7

This...

If there is something to do with gaming that is superior on Win8 and really makes the case for it as a gaming platform than I will switch. I am interested in Win8, but not for my personal system. At least not until it's proven better for gaming (faster or what not) or I am forced to use it. I am not a fan of Metro, but I guess I'm not the target market.

It's gotta prove itself to me first.

At $40 I'll definitely buy it, then toss it in my drawer and forget about it. I tried the previews and hated them. It offers me very little while making me give up too much.

On a x86 based tablet I'm actually excited about Win 8, but on the desktop I won't touch it.

I see some decent new under-the-hood security features, definitely on my "buy" list for $40.

for those with technet accounts, how long after 7 went RTM did it hit technet?

2 weeks from the declared RTM date (though keep in mind that the actual build date is several days older, it has to go through testing). Without a doubt, an RTM escrow build exists, and it will be finalized in the next week or so. MSDN will probably get it on the 6th, with TechNet a week later. Since developers need to have the final build to test against when submitting apps to the store (and that's new this time around), I suspect they'll get it at the end of August or mid-September along with the final SDK.

Agree with this, I ran AS-SSD on some SSD's in my system - got a nice increase in speeds from W7

I've had an MSDN license for at least 10 years now and this is about the most under whelming product release for me. I'm more interested in what comes in Windows Server 8 at this point.

I was particularly surprised to see how quick it was on a 7200 rpm SATA II drive I swapped in; everything felt snappy.

The trick to making any computer snappy with even the slowest hard drive in the world is to have a second drive just for the swap file. It doesn't need to be a good drive. You can use one of the spare ones sitting in the corner of your closet.
This computer I'm using right now is lightning fast. The C drive is some piece of crap Seagate drive that was on sale a few years ago. It's fast when it doesn't need to fight against the swap file all the time.

I'll probably skip Windows 8. There's nothing wrong with Windows 8. I just don't see a reason to upgrade.

New security features and people are claiming huge gains in performance in many ways, what's not to like? Why does everyone keep saying it's $40? That's for the upgrade, right? I'm gonna need a new retail copy, any ideas on the price on that?

Good to see you around mech, thanks for your pc building guide. I used it 7 years ago to build my first custom rig.
