AT&T withdraws T-Mobile merger papers from the FCC....

This is great, if Sprint and/or T-mo can stay afloat. Sprint's partnering with the corrupt Lightsquared folks has me concerned, though.
 
This makes China Telecom's entry into the US market that much easier IMHO... pretty sure they'll be looking at acquiring T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom now that the door is open, and DT still wants to divest T-Mo. I think this would make China Telecom's entry into the US market that much easier.
 
I am in awe that it's likely not going to happen.

As far as China based cell providers entering the US market, I think it's a matter of when, not if.

China Telecom has already committed to, and yeah, they have an uphill battle for regulatory approval. But honestly, despite it being "China", really what's the difference whether T-Mo is owned by a Chinese company or a German company?

Difference is that China designs and makes phone that will operate on their network. God knows what else phones & network might else be doing, spying-wise.

Telekom also said they wouldn't be investing any future money in TMO, right? TMO will be at a major disadvantage in a few years as their HSPA+ network drops behind everyone else.

China Telecom is state-owned. They take their oders from the same people that control the People's Liberation Army. Also, if we cannot setup our own wireless provider in China WTF would we allow them to do that here? It won't happen.
 
honestly, a merger would've helped unify spectrum instead of having phone manufacturers make 248573945 different models with 2843973204598 different names for each carrier.
 
Guess it's time for Apple to jump in and purchase T-Mobile and make them the exclusive iPhone 5 carrier....Well at least they'd get the iPhone! In the end most likely the outcome would be worse for consumers. Of course for those who don't live in the Apple eco-system it would mean plenty of bandwidth for us 🙂

It sucks that the US market is this way, but that also is the phone manufacturers faults for allowing that to ever happen in the first place.

Agreed. I was looking forward to the prospect of a unified GSM carrier operating on the same major bands as the rest of the world's GSM carriers.

i don't get it...you already have that in at&t, don't you?

the nice thing in other parts of the world is you can switch carriers with your existing phone without worrying about bands...but if there was only one gsm network in the US that wouldn't be a benefit any longer.
