well, i used to have att here in nyc and I thought their services were pretty good. The reason why I changed to voicestream was because I used to get no reception in bayside, queens and that's where I used to go to college. After switching to voicestream I liked their service, but guess what? my reception in flushing, where I live, sucks. So I'm thinking about switching back.:D

I hope you have better luck.

ATT is terrible! I had it for 4 years and finally switched to Verizon a couple months ago.

The reception is extremely bad and their network is always overloaded (try making a call during peak time in a crowded location and you'll see). You will also notice alot of calls rolling over directly to VM and not causing your phone to ring because the network is so overloaded. One time, at a convention center, it took me 60 minutes just to get a call through. All I kept getting were fast busy signals from the network.

I would not recommend it. I hate to say it since I really despise the company but Verizon has a much much better wireless network and their calling plans are pretty much middle ground from ATT and Sprint.

It all depends on the location. Here in Ohio Verizon really sucks and AT&T is great. I would just talk to all your friends and family with cell phones and see how they like their serivce provider.

this is how it breaks down...

ATT service is lousy because its oversubscribed in nyc. If you try to use your phone around 5-7pm, its hard to connect. The good thing about ATT is that they supposedly have excellent customer service.

Sprint is cheap-- cell phone for the masses, lots of minutes, service is so so, customer service is atrocious. I think they have a bigger local calling area than the others service providers.

Verizon is by far the best in NYC area but it is also the most expensive (at least the last time i checked, and their selection of phones was limited).

A couple of friends of mine have Voicestream and they are very happy with it. I was happy with my Voicestream phone as well and I had the option of getting some nice GSM phones to use with the service. They give you a lot of minutes as well.

Don't forget about Cingular-- they are starting to roll out in nyc. I have no clue how their service is or will be.
