Southwestern Bell = SBC, the parent company of the recent acquisitions.

Also of note, and missing from Colbert's video (because it would kill the humor) is that before, AT&T was pretty much the only phone company in the US (some mom & pop telcos, and GTE notwithstanding).

Now it's the AT&T, SPRINT, Verizon, and a jillion Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) ... so there's "competition" in the industry.

Is it any good? Or you rather have cable companies triple play?

I have cingular...not much complain here.

Which would be wrong (but possibly funny). Things are very different now. There are more CLECs than you can shake a stick at, plus VoIP providers, plus a buttload of cellular voice/data providers.

Things are very different. I understand his point, honest. I's just tossing in another couple cents worth to indicate that while potentially funny, it's just flat wrong.

Verizon is GTE and Bell Atlantic (and the 2005 acquisition of MCI).

Sprint (if that gets brought up) began as the communications arm of Southern Pacific RR (now Union Pacific), the world's oldest modern (limited liability) corporation. Sprint was also at one point part of GTE.

Colbert is right. Our phone system 20+ years after the Ma Bell breakup bears a somewhat astonishing resemblance to what it looked like before the breakup. Except now we get to own our phones...
