If you are going to order ATT cable modem service mention the following promo:

Just received ATT Broadband flyer in mail for cable Modem service. 4 months @ $21.95, plus free install (via rebate). After promo, $45.95 if you are cable tv subscriber else $56.95. 888-824-8077

When I previously signed up ATT at another address, they wouldn't give me any promo unless I could reference such.

I am currently on SBC/DSL (pacbell) which I hate immensely - about the same price, but terrible service and limited newsgroup access. Unfortuneately I'm bound by 1 yr contract else I pay for dsl modem IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW OR HAS EXPERIENCE GETTING OUT OF DSL CONTRACT W/PACBELL DSL- I WOULD APPRECIATE HELP.

Thanks and good shopping.

in my experience i have had the exact opposite. in the berkeley area

AT&T service is horrid. while i had it ... we went through 4-5 cable modems and service was down consistently. everytime the cable modem broke we'd have to call a technician, who'd take at least a couple days to get tehre (sometimes longer). this year, the people downstairs (who still have ATTBI) ... their service goes down daily without fail.

this year ... PacBell DSL has only gone down twice on me the entire semester. it's a good thing. it's faster and more reliable. and the cable modem doesnt friggin break.

i would highly recommend NOT goign with ATTBI if you're in the Berkeley area... that's my story

How weird dudonoogen,
I live in Berkeley right now and have been using ATT cable for 4 months w/no problems at all. I wish i could still use them in my new place, but they only accept dsl.

I've had both cable and dsl at same time, and found cable worked better when it worked. After initial roll out never had problems. DSL lmmited by distance to switch and slower speed one direction either way. ATT also offers much better access to newsgroups esp. for downloading music, dvds and software - that worth price alone.

Odd, I know a LOT of people with ATTTBI in Berkeley. Yeah, it's not GREAT, it goes down sometimes, but the problems you're talking about seem specific to your location. I know one other person who's cable goes down a lot and keeps kicking them off (around LaLoma and Ridge) but I know someone else up one block (Highland and Ridge) that has had almost NO problems at all.

See if you can get a technician out there, to replace some hardware/wiring/etc.

As an aside, it's still better than my roommate, who, rather than split the cost of cable (like $15 each) wanted to pay for earthlink dialup ($20/mo) because he doesn't like cable because its non-guaranteed bandwidth and he claims that the ping times can be worse than on dialup (I dunno about you but I don't think I've ever seen 180ms ping to google... and that's best dialup vs worst cable)

I don't understand it.

huh. i too live in berkeley and use attbi. my cable used to go down a LOT but i think it might be the cable modem because everytime i sorta wiggle the power cord to the cable modem it flakes out. i wonder if it's southside/northside thing because everyone i know with attbi on southside has never complained about their cable going down.

A lot of ppl I know in Berkeley who had ATT had a lot of problems with their service... slow and used to go out all the time (too many college students d/ling stuff...heh) No problems whatsoever at my house in Castro Valley--maybe it's pretty solid b/c it was one of the original @Home "test" neighborhoods when they were rolling out the service... anyone else get an email saying they're switching your cable modem in a few weeks for one with more "features" (I have no clue what those are...) (Yes I'm still renting modem--tried buying one and putting it in but the stupid thing didn't work and had to return it--too lazy to get another one.

$57 is awful steep.

i've had at&t @home in castro valley since 1998. They are sending me a new modem and paying me $5 to upgrade since my current modem is so old. Service has been spectacular though, I've had no more than 3 outtages (longer than 24hrs), and once was when @home switched over to attbi.

Never heard of the $57 for non subscribers. Although I am not in Berkley, I am an ATTBI subscriber in Antioch, about 20 miles east, and I pay $42.95 and I do not have cable TV. I love it, it is fast and only goes down when the cable jerkoffs go into the box in front of my house. They were going into that box so often several months ago for unrelated reasons, but they ended up screwing me up. Calls to support would end up in appointments two weeks later, so I learned to fix it myself. Attbi is cheaper and more reliable than dsl in my area.

Man, alot of us Berkeley people visit here. Who woulda thought?

Anyways, I too live in Berkeley and I too have the attbi cable modem service. I've actually had it for years (more than 3, I think) and have rarely had any problems. I live in northside, farther away from most of the students-maybe that's why my service is better? I dunno.
