AT&T Cable (external modem) how do I connect two computers to this?

This is my first time to the forum and I have a simple problem:

I want to hook up two Windows 98 computers to a common internet connection via my AT&T Cable service. I have an external modem and previously they installed a card into the PCI slot.

I have not yet purchased the second computer - which is why I ask this question now - I need to know what various parts I need to purchase to have both computers use the same connection?

I have heard that I need to link the two computers together first before having both of them share the same internet connection. Is this true?

Is there a simple step by step instruction (along with recommended parts list) to do this? I am willing to do the homework to make this happen. Thank you,
Tom.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. The simplest way is to buy a router with switch or hub ports.

Thanks for the reply - I want the cheapest solution but one that gets the job done. I read that there are two types of cable connections I could make but I may need to go for the more costly for the cable connection that I have requires it - is this true? I need basically a guide for how to put it all together with a list of recommended purchases.

thanks,
tom

The cheapest solution (If it is Win98 SE version) would be to slap 2 NICs in one machine and use ICS in windows.

I know you are new but there are lots of posts about this. I suggest you do a search about connection sharing and ICS and routers then read what has already been posted. This will help you understand alot.

Also go to this link to answer alot of your questions about cable connection sharing.

Do both of these and that should take care of alot of your questions. Good luck and wlcome.
