Saw tons of these just dangling off tiny threads throughout the park yesterday:

They were tiny, hardly the length of a fingernail and kept blowing around in the wind making it difficult to get a shot at all. So happy a few turned out well enough to share!

It was too cold for the beetle to move on its own so I moved it off the trail and onto a sunny rock. The beetle wasn't letting go of its stick though. Once it warmed up it was going to come out swinging.

Night-blooming cereus cacti
June 23, 2018

The cacti generally all bloom on the same night and the flowers last just a few hours. This year we likely get another bloom tonight as not all the buds opened last night. These wild cacti grow in the desert a few miles from our house. For most of the year, the cacti look like dead sticks.
