The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show is underway! Chalcedony geode, field of view ~5 inches, image rotated to likely orientation of formation, 25 photos stacked.

Hyalite opal, SiO2*nH2O, from Valec in the Czech Republic. Field of view is about a centimeter. Each image is stacked from ~40 photos. Hyalite from this locality is thought to form via direct deposition of silica-rich vapor onto host rock.

1st shot is my favorite. In the second shot, looks like someone needs to clean their glass/ 😀

From last night:

Great band (Bombadil - Bombadil News) at a small venue (fewer than 100 people).

I was super close to the stage and was only at one spot the whole time (couldn't move because it was packed and didn't want to get in anyone's way). Shooting with my A37 and 50mm 1.7 (the only really fast lens I have).

White balance was hard for me as parts of the stage was lit in red, other parts with blue or white light.

I was playing around with focus stacking under UV light tonight.

Same hyalite opal as in pics above, this time under shortwave UV light. Green color is from trace uranium. Bright blue specks are dust. Keeping dust off the subjects during UV photography is a pain. Some photographers keep a fan blowing on the specimens to keep the dust airborne. I may have to try that. 18 images, 5 second exposures. Field of view is about 2.5 cm.

Orange and white fluorescing calcite with green fluorescing opal. The orange is from trace manganese in the calcite. The green might be trace uranium again but I'm not convinced. 11 images, 2.5 second exposures. Field of view is about 30 cm.

IronWing: those shots are always cool, would be neat to see a penny or toothpick in there to get a real sense of scale.

depends what you are going to take pictures of. For example, I hike alot and am outdoors for most of my shots, so I decided early that I wanted a camera body that would be able to withstand the wear and tear I give to my equipment as well as the dirt/grime from the environment I'll be in. For me, the Pentax cameras were the ticket. I started with a K7, which had a full magnesium body which is fully weather-sealed. Just recently I sold that body and upgraded to the Pentax K5 and have no regrets. I also like the fact that it has a K mount, which has been used on Pentax camera bodies for roughly the last 30 years. Basically, I can buy a cheap lens at a yard sale and it'll work on my K5.

Like I said, it all depends on what you are wanting to shoot... decide that, then start looking at what will suit your needs.
