At Pacfanweb's request... My '71 CJ5

Pacfanweb mentioned in another thread that he wanted some information about my CJ5. Rather than derail the thread I've tossed it all here.

1971 CJ5, so while Jeep was then owned by AMC it was still built to the Kaiser Jeep design. In 1972 the CJ5 was redesigned with the most noticeable change being the longer nose to accomodate the straight 6 AMC engines so mine is pretty much the last of the run for what's known as the "early" CJ5s.

Here's the drivetrain:
3" black diamond lift springs
32" tires
Dana 27 front axle
Dana 44 flanged axle (came with factory one piece axle shafts, better than some of the older axles) with a detroit locker
Axle gearing is 4.88:1
SM420 transmission, it's a GM truck transmission with a 7.0:1 first gear 😱
Dana 18 transfer case, 2.46:1 low range
Locking hubs in the front
Buick 225 engine, and yes that's the factory engine
50 pound flywheel
Full cage around the passenger compartment

With the gearing I've got I have an 84:1 crawl ratio. The heavy flywheel lets the engine idle down to almost nothing. In low range in first gear I can idle over hard obstacles, barely giving it any gas at all. It rolls slower than molasses. It's so low that if I do stall on an obstacle I put it in first, let out the clutch, but my foot to the floor on the brake and start it up while giving it a little gas. The extremely low gearing lets me overpower the brakes on the starter and the engine will start right up. There's no worry about stalling on an obstacle, then rolling back while getting started.

The downside of the gearing is that I'm reving the engine like crazy on the highway, I don't like going much over 55. Of course, in a lifted short wheel base jeep with no doors going over 55 starts getting scary. High winds can make it wander around and turns at high speeds can be a bit anerving.

Offroad the thing just works. You point it where you want in low gear and you'll roll over it without trying. It's a blast to drive, it almost makes it too easy.

nice little truck. what suppliers for parts for old jeeps can you recommend
?

You'd be surprised what you can get through normal sources, Napa and Rock Auto carry more than you would believe.

However, you're going to be best served by joining a forum for your particular kind of jeep. Part interchangeability can be complicated among older jeeps so its best to find a place that will tell you what fits and where to find it. If I remember right lift kits for later wagoneers won't work on your '72 so make sure you get one that will fit your jeep.

You might want to start with http://www.ifsja.org/ because your wagoneer is considered a full sized jeep.

For my CJ I use http://www.earlycj5.com for my information.

Nice. I've had 6 CJ's, am currently restoring/modifying my 1981 CJ-7 that I've had since '86.

Hope to finish it one day. 😉

Specs will be:
406 Small Block Chevy
NV4500 trans..has granny gear and O/D
Dana 300 transfer case with LoMax 4:1 gears
Dana 44's front and rear, both with ARB air lockers, disc brakes in rear
Alcan 4" lift springs, custom-built for this Jeep

Body sand blasted and all rusty panels replaced

Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 33x15.50's on 12" Eagle Alloy Type 102 wheels

etc, etc.

Here's essentially what it currently looks like, mocked up:

That pic was measuring for the fender flares, here it is with the ones I bought:

You're going in a bit different direction than I did, not that there's anything with either way of doing it. I wanted to leave the original drivetrain intact for the most part because even stock it's a very capable vehicle for the desert trails I like.

I drove it for years with the stock 258 and 33's. In fact, I put about 100k miles on it.

Going to be a toy now, so I decided to up the HP a little. The LoMax gears in the transfer case and the low first gear in the NV4500 will give me a 92.23 crawl ratio in first or reverse.
Probably be able to let out the clutch, then get out and walk away from it faster than it'll move. Yet at 65mph, it'll only be just above 2000 rpm's. And the small block will pull it like that, whereas the 258 would not.

My first Jeep was the same color as yours. Didn't like it to begin with, but it really grew on me.

Jeeps rock.

That's one thing that I'd like to get for my jeep is an overdrive. The dana 18 transfer case can accept a bolt on overdrive, it doesn't cut down my already very short rear driveshaft.

They still make those old Saturn overdrives....I think either Novak or Advance has them.

There's a guy called "Herm the overdrive guy" that sells new and refurbed ones. He's practically a celebrity in the pre-AMC jeep community. Unfortunately they aren't cheap (I can find a used and working transmission and transfercase for cheaper) so I can't afford one right now.

Not that anyone asked but I too have a old Jeep. 🙂 Mine is a 1974 CJ-5.

It has the AMC 304 V8, 3 speed T15 tranny, Dana 20 transfer case and Dana 44 rear and 30 front end. Tires are 33x12.5 BFG mudders. It has an axle over spring swap with the wide CJ-7 srings. Also has the reverse front shackle. Also put on a front disc brake kit. Shocks are Rancho RS9000. Gears are 3.73. Engine is fairly stock with a RV cam, aluminum intake , Holley 600 carb, fenderwell headers and purple hornie mufflers.

I have more lift with the axle over swap then I did when I ran 2 inch Rancho springs and 3 inch shackles. Plus it drives like a dream and runs nice and strait at 65+.

Post some pics. We can make this the official AT Garage Jeep thread.

I don't know about you guys, but going down the highway at 70 feels like cheating death with no top sometimes. 😀

I rode from Tallahassee to Fort Lauderdale in my roommate's '75 CJ5 one time. I felt like I'd been in a heavyweight boxing match when we arrived.

Actually, after I put on the reverse shackel and axle over spring and added a steering box brace mine drives real nice.

But back in the day it was all over the road. I have even got pulled over for drunk driving in it. I tried to explain it to the cop that it's just something you put up with.

Mine was fine when it was stock. The shackle reverse isn't what fixed it....you must have fixed another problem accidentally when you did the reverse and SOA. Really, SOA typically makes them NOT drive as good as stock.

I put almost 100k on mine, and you could run the speedo up past 85 (down a hill) and it was fine.

Mine tops out at 70 downhill really. Fifth gear is almost useless, just good for keeping my foot down and the lower RPMs.

I plan on lining the tub sometime in the fall and I'd like to replace the carb, as it probably needs it, but I might not.

I used to have a Suzuki Samurai and that beast would top out at 55-60 if I was lucky
I lived in Raleigh, and dated a girl in Greensboro 1.5hrs away, thus lots of road trips.

My trick late at night was to tailgate semi trucks....they would kind of suck you along. Drafting, as it were. 😉

It was amazing how much less gas pedal it took to run certain speeds. I'd be rolling along behind one, and decide that was enough and start to pass....and have to go from 1/2 pedal to almost floored just to barely creep by.

Tristicus.....yep, a 258 with no gears and a T-5 = no balls in high gear. There's some tuning and tweaking you can do to make it better, but it still won't do much in 5th.

My CJ-5 has plenty of power to go faster on the highway, it's just that I end up tearing down the highway reving the snot out of the engine. I run out of gearing way before I run out of power.

I'd like to, but I doubt I would know how to do it or be comfortable enough doing it myself.

I tried "mounting" a camera today, but didn't work out so well (just really bumpy obviously). A friend from NH wanted to see how loud it was too, compared to his truck, so I did an "exhaust note".
