AT nuclear workers represent

from another thread, i saw at least 3 or 4 people who worked at a nuke plant.

post here! don't have to post which plant but post whether you are a PWR or BWR and which department you work in.

BWR - system engineering here

I used to work on the nuke plant on subs at Electric Boat, was there from 2001 to 2005. Had to go through all kinds of training to be in radiation and high radiation areas, had to use the frisker to exit a high radiation area. I remember looking at hot spots before entering a high radiation area. I wasnt trained for contaminated areas, so didnt have to wear those suits, thankfully. I was an Electrical Engineer, worked on the I&C equipment and wiring inside the reactor compartment.

How do you get such a job?

I've heard nuclear facilities security guys get to play with some awesome toys.
I can has play time?

That, or IT security. Surely it's important there.

But seriously. About to be on the market with a fresh B.A.
So.... help me help the country's nuclear facilities help the country by helping to protect the nuclear facilities from the country's enemies who wish to do the opposite of help. 🙂

you... apply at their website? where are you located? i might can help :hmm:

I'm finishing up my last semester for my degree (B.S. Nuclear Engineering), but when I graduate I'll be working at the same company I did for the last two summers. I was working on and will continue to work on the Fermi 3 project, an ESBWR that will be located in SE Michigan.

The project is still in the licensing phase, so I'll just be at a desk for a year or two, but hopefully once construction gets going I'll be at the site most of the time. Should be exciting and I'm looking forward to seeing this project all the way through (cross your fingers).

I work in nuclear remediation at DOE sites. Most of my time has been spent at Hanford. I have worked on a few projects there, currently I am at the Waste Treatment Plant (VitPlant) that is supposed to turn all of Hanford's liquid yuck into glass.
Problem is storage now, with Yucca Mountain shut down and all.
I have worked at a BWR (Columbia Generating Station) as well.

I hate HATE hate DOE nuclear jobs. Not enough to do, always bored, always rework rework rework. God I can't wait to get out of there.

i thought everyone was doing the AP 1000 for new reactors?

Nope. About twice as many AP1000 applications as ESBWR so far, but I think people are leaning more towards the ESBWR currently because Westinghouse is having so many problems fixing the AP1000 issues.

yeah i heard about issues they had. i like the esbwr myself.

PWR

I am a Mechanical maintenance instructor, except during outages and then I work on the primary side AOV (air operated valve) maintenance crew.

Does ex navy nuke count? I was a nuke electrician mate on the USS Abraham Lincoln, 1997-2003.

PWR, A4W reactor design.

Actually most people who had specified an ESBWR as their preferred design have switched to the ABWR or else given up altogether. Generally speaking I would consider the design to be going down the crapper.

Well anyways, I work at Watts Bar Unit 2 (only nuclear unit currently under construction) as an electrical design engineer. After that it will most likely be Bellefonte Unit 1 (B&W 277) or Calvert Cliffs Unit 3 (EPR).

Well, I've been out of the loop for a few months, but I haven't heard anything like that. I'd like to read about it though, if you have any information you can post.

Basically, 3 of the utilities who were looking at building an ESBWR reversed course or else gave up. Fermi may well be the only site still considering the design. I haven't read too much into the technical reasons, mostly it has just been seeing headlines since none of the reactor projects really involved me. I work for Bechtel, so I am much more interested in the sites they are looking at like Calvert Cliffs, South Texas Project and Bellefonte. We jsut recently had a meeting with some of the higher up managers on how these projects were going (because Watts Bar Unit 2 design is almost complete and they are laying off 600 people). Basically no other nuclear reactor project is going forward for at least another nine months year. There are currently three units which have construction permits and the next permit (a Part 52 license) likely won't be issued until 2012. You can do design work before then of course, but its too far off and the utilities are still too concerned about Obama's anti-nuclear tendencies to put any morey up at this point.

while not working in a power plant or on a ship I do handle am241be neutron and cs137 gamma sources along with neutron generators at my job.
I know a guy that was at fermi, an intern when he started. know any michigan tech grads that work there now?
