I was down in El Centro, CA when the Easter Sunday 7.2 quake hit. Even though I am a native Californian, that was quite a ride.

Hope everybody down there is OK. I've seen some news coverage and it looks like there was some moderate damage in some areas.

GA lives in Christchurch, doesn't he?

I always remember because the name + his username is ironic.

Hope he's okay.

Power is out all over there, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if he can't post for a while.

Yeah, could be a bit. Structurally, things seem to be ok.

So does this make New Zealand closer to America or farther from America?

Wait, I'm the bloody geologist who should know this shit. <off to look at tectonic maps>

Edit: New Zealand is moving away from America. Whew!

Auckland is okay, apparently we felt a slight tremor but I slept right through it. But yeah, Christchurch is pretty shaken up. Water is urgent, conservation is strongly advised, most water is out and what is there may be contaminated. It may take a week for all the water to come back up. Around 75% of the city's power is down, and virtually all of rural Canterbury is out.

Do they have buildings there or do they live in grass huts?

Extensive structural damage by the looks of it in Chch tho there are no reported deaths so far. Looks like people are mostly ok so that's good. By the looks of it it's going to take a while to rebuild. Pretty damn big earthquake.

I woke up sometime during the night but I only heard the pretty strong rain so didn't feel anything up in Auckland. I actually found out about it when I got phoned by my parents from overseas to see if I'm ok. Now that's a bad way to wake up.

Hey guys, yes I'm extremely close to the epicenter and the quake was very strong indeed! I'm ok though. Pics coming very soon. Big mess to clean up :-/ I only just got power.

Thanks for the kind (and not so kind) words.

Good to hear you're okay! Which was worse the quake or the ban?

glad to hear you're ok GA. how's gayner and the rest of you kiwis doing?
Gayner lives on the North Island so he's very far from the quake. I have heard there are a couple of people in critical condition, but I don't have a lot of details.
