EDIT:

This was locked last time I looked at it. I don't look at it for a couple hours and it gets a lot of responses.

Anyway, I've been paid now, so it's no longer an issue.

So, this past Saturday, I was at home and I got a message on AIM from a well-respected AT member who was having quite a big problem with a computer of his in a commercial setting. He asked me to help him fix something, and I spent the next hour or so wrtiting and testing a script that would fix all his problems.

When I got everything working for him, he said something to the effect of "Wow, I'm impressed, how much do I owe you?"
I responded saying "Well, it ended up taking about an hour, and I usually charge $35/hour for this sort of thing, so $35."

Honestly, the work I did, in the timeframe that I did it, given the problem he was having, was worth WAY more than $35. He got a deal.

He agreed to paypal me the $35 "tomorrow" (on saturday night - so "tomorrow" was this past sunday).

On Monday, I checked my paypal account, and no one had sent me anything. I sent him an IM about it, and he kinda laughed it off and didn't really say anything concrete.

Here it is, Thursday, and still no money. He's not online at the moment so I have no way of bugging him right now.

Thoughts?

Call the police. If it were me, I would get the money before I do anything.

Did you do it on your free time? Do you have any written proof (doubtful, but it's never bad to check)?

Can you send him a "bill" from your Paypal account? Request for payment or whatever they call it.

This thread's been unlocked? Weird...

In any case, when I volunteer to help someone I never ask for payment-- hence, the word "volunteer". Once someone pays you, they feel you have an obligation towards them which I would prefer not to have.

But the fact they offered to pay and hasn't speaks volumes about their character, so that $35 is probably money well spent.

Sucks, but without a contract you can't really do anything legal about it.

If they ask again, charge them quadruple the amount and get it in writing before you do anything. Other than that I would just ignore them for all eternity.

Sure, we all thought Quararsky was a stand-up guy, and we're all surprised by this turn of events.
