<< GirlFriday - Maybe I should be more specific. I don't have a great deal of sympathy for someone (a woman in this case, but gender is irrelevent in this case) who goes into a thread, expresses a contrary opinion (in a somewhat hostile manner), gets flamed, and then wants to take their ball and go home. When I read the thread, I noted that it got personal in response to what easily can be read as attacks on the original poster. >>
You talkin' to me, Michael?
In the thread where I expressed my disgust and desire to just get away from Anandtech for a while, I don't think I got to the point of "taking my ball and going home." However, I thought (and still do) that if I couldn't manage to stop taking the opinion of a certain person so seriously, then I had no business hanging around and reading more of it until I could find a better perspective. It's called being mature enough to know when to retreat and being strong enough to follow through despite what others think of me. I try very hard not to attack and retreat, but there were others taking up the gauntlet that were far better equipped than I to continue the battle.
I don't believe I started a "I'm leaving" thread, and apart from one sentence at the end of a post, never expressed what I intended to do to anyone in particular. I doubt more than a handful of people give a damn if I stay or go (and the ones that do expressed it to me, which I appreciate immensely), temporarily or permanently. As far as they "lynch mob" mentality, I don't think there necessarily is one, unless you count the political, religious, ethnic and gender threads.
If you noticed Wangel's thread, you'll see that even the Mods missed it at first - so it's not always the case that the Mods will take care of the offensive stuff, but I don't think posting replies constitutes "trying to close it down." As far as point #2, there's no way I would PM Wangel. I prefer to use my PM's for friendly, happy thoughts - no need to start any private wars that I could have fun with in public (j/k).
And the rest...well, I'm not that easily offended. I swear like a sailor, can enjoy a cowbell right along with the boys (like Hzl said, it could be that I just want to be a cowbell) and can generally fend for myself. I don't want or need to be protected, sheltered or shielded from potentially offensive material - if I don't like it and think I have an intelligent, opposing view, I'll share it. 99.99% of the time I can sit back and laugh at some of the more outrageous things I've seen posted.
Of course, if you weren't singling me out, just ignore all of the above.
