Has anyone had any luck playing versus mode? I tried for a little while but it seems pretty unbalanced since the survivors always seem to win. I could barely even get close to them as an infected.

you hafta play it real strategically since you die easily as infected unless you're the tank. I found that the infected get more points than survivors if they play equally as well since it's harder to play as infected (but more fun in my opinion).
 
i love playing as the smoker now. hunter isnt that fun for me but i always spawn as that.

i like playing as the boomer (and the tank if I get him). Seeing how many zombies come after you barf on them gives me so much satisfaction.

This is how I see it:
Hunter - you usually get a few slashes in but can never kill the person before he/she dies unless the team is busy
Smoker - you can almost never get the body to you before you get shot / die. The choking does work well though if you're able to get them from the top of a building or something.
Boomer - Just hide behind a corner and when the person comes, barf on him. Or, sneak up to a group and have one of them shoot you to bile the whole group. It's frustrating though how he only has 50 hp, and is so fat that he's easy to see.
Tank - If you get spawned in some far away place, you sometimes can't reach the survivors before you lose control. If you do maintain control though, you are unstoppable if you remember to use the cement-throw to stun them.

I played versus for the first time last night and the zombies can definitely kill the survivors (we did it a couple of times). However, it is critical to use teamwork when playing the zombie side. If you just attack the survivors alone, you will get butchered. However, if you can coordinate a simultaneous strike of a boomer summoning the horde and a hunters/smokers incapacitating a couple of the survivors, you can do some serious damage. Also keep in mind that you get to respawn multiple times, and the healing ability of the survivors is limited by available med kits. I love the feel of versus, it's very strategic.
 
certain level are huge advantage to zombies... like the subway.

i find the zombies win more than humans
