Up to 30 dead in blasts in Egyptian Red Sea resorts

By Haaretz Service and Reuters

Explosions in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in the early hours of Saturday morning killed up to 30 people and wounded more than 100, Egyptian officials said.

"Many of the injuries are very serious and they are in critical condition," said the doctor at Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, who asked not to be named.

Police said the explosions were caused by four car bombs in Sharm el-Sheikh and the nearby resort of Naama Bay.

The explosions caused pandemonium in the resort as people rushed to go home for fear of more car bombs, said one resident, who asked not to be named.

The first explosion, shortly after 1 A.M., was audible more than 1 km away, a local resident said. It started a fire and smoke billowed over the town.

About 15 minutes later, more explosions were audible from the direction of Naama Bay, about six km away, he said.

A police source said four car bombs appeared to have exploded - one near the Sharm el-Sheikh bazaar, and three in Naama Bay, at a tourist bazaar, the Ghazala Hotel and the Moevenpick Hotel.

"The [Ghazala] hotel was completely burned down, destroyed," said Amal Mustafa, 28, an Egyptian who was visiting Sharm with her family and who drove by the Ghazala Gardens.

Naama Bay has dozens of luxury hotels popular with divers and holidaymakers from Europe.

Khaled Sakran, a Sharm resident, said he saw the first blast from the Old Market. "I saw the saw the fire in the sky," he said. "Right after, I saw a light in the sky and heard another explosion, coming from Naama Bay."

Although the explosions took place after 1 A.M., the bazaars would have been busy with holidaymakers at this time of year because the daytime is so hot, residents said.

Ahmed Fawzi, an Egyptian lawyer visiting Naama Bay on business, told Reuters that one of the explosions ripped the door of his office off its hinges.

A resident living 10 km from Sharm el-Sheikh told Reuters explosions had shaken the windows of his house.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has a holiday villa in the Golf Hotel, close to the Moevenpick.

In October 2004, more than 30 people were killed, many of them Israeli, in explosions in Sinai resorts packed with Israeli tourists.

CAIRO, Egypt - At least two large explosions rocked the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula early Saturday, killing at least 25 people and injuring 110, police said.

The blasts shook windows miles away, and smoke and fire were visible rising from Sharm's Naama Bay, a main strip of beach hotels, witnesses said.

One blast hit the Ghazala Gardens hotel, a 176-room four-star resort on the main tourist strip in the Naama Bay area of Sharm el-Sheik, witnesses said. A second blast was heard in the Old Market, another Sharm neighborhood.

"The hotel was completely burned down, destroyed," said Amal Mustafa, 28, an Egyptian who was visiting with her family and drove by the Ghazala Gardens.

Khaled Sakran, a resident, said he saw the first blast from the Old Market. "I saw the fire in the sky," he said. "Right after, I saw a light in the sky and heard another explosion, coming from Naama Bay." He said he believed there was also a third explosion.

A police official in Sharm el-Sheik said 25 were killed and 110 wounded in multiple explosions near several hotels. He could not say how many blasts occurred. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he gave the information ahead of any official announcement.

Sounds like it will be a larger number than 25 dead if the entire hotel burnt down. :(

Let me hazard a quick guess: Islamic terrorists were responsible for this..

The only thing Islam is good for is terrorism and building car bombs. It is a failure at everything else.

At Least 45 Dead As Bombs Hit Egyptian Resort
Another Bomb Wounds Several In Lebanon

POSTED: 8:24 pm EDT July 22, 2005
UPDATED: 10:49 pm EDT July 22, 2005

A series of explosions struck luxury hotels in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheik early Saturday, killing at least 45 people. Around 200 were wounded.

It was the deadliest attack in Egypt in nearly a decade. The explosions shook windows more than five miles away. Smoke and fire rose from Naama Bay, a main strip of beach hotels in the desert city at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula.

Dazed tourists milled about the darkened streets as Egyptian rescuers searched for dead and injured, and ambulances sped away with victims.

A security official says at least four car bombs were used in the attack. One car bomb killed 17 people -- believed to be Egyptians -- who were sitting at an outdoor coffee shop.

The dead in the Sharm blasts are believed to include British, Russian, Dutch, Kuwaitis, Saudis, Qataris and Egyptians.

At Least A Dozen Wounded In Lebanon

Meanwhile, authorities in Lebanon said at least a dozen people have been wounded by a bomb in an area of restaurants and bars just hours after a visit by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The blast was from a bomb placed near a car parked in front of a restaurant. It panicked the hundreds of people dining or smoking water pipes in the bustling sidewalk cafes on the popular, narrow street.

Lebanon has seen a string of bomb assassinations of politicians and other figures in recent months -- almost all opponents of Syria.

Lebanon's tourism minister said Friday's attack was a "message" to the new government, announced this week and dominated by anti-Syrian ministers. The minister said the blast aimed to shake security and scare off the thousands of tourists, mainly from oil-rich Gulf countries.

Just quick capital punishment. Even if you are suspected of ties to fundies, kill them, and there families. It will cause alot of hurt/pain/bloodhsed at first. But after the first couple thousands familes are wiped clean, I am sure that people will reconsider joining fundamentalist.
