At least 245 killed in Brazil nightclub fire

DAYMN! 😱

Panicked crowds pushed toward the exits as fire swept through a packed nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday.

Hundreds didn't escape in time from the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria.

The blaze killed at least 245 people, many of whom apparently died from smoke inhalation, police said. Others were trampled in the rush for the exits, one security guard told CNN affiliate Band News....

There was a pyrotechnics show going on inside the club when the fire started. Authorities stopped short of blaming it for the blaze, saying the cause was still under investigation...

The Kiss nightclub is popular with young people in Santa Maria, drawing between 2,000 and 3,000 people a night on the weekends.

The blaze broke out during a weekend when students were celebrating the end of summer. Students at many Brazilian universities return to school on Monday.

The incident called to mind a 2003 nightclub fire in Rhode Island where pyrotechnics used by the heavy metal band Great White ignited a blaze that killed more than 90 people.

Pyrotechnics were also involved in a 2004 nightclub fire in Argentina that killed 194 people and a 2009 explosion at a nightclub in Russia that left more than 100 dead.

Not sure why people think it's a good idea to use toy armaments indoors. Nothing about indoor explosions and fire jets sounds like a good idea to me.

They're all probably thinking YOLO when the dumbasses at nightclub set off the firework. I mean, what's the worst that can happen, right?

Good thing my friends didn't get killed when they went to Brazil.

Wow what a terrible way to go. Imagine being in this fire, you SEE the exit it might be 10 feet away, but there's just too much people to get to it fast enough, and you burn. Just terrible.

This is why buildings have maximum capacity rules, and they are very strict. For there to be that much people, that band must have really been on fire!

lol yeah indoor pyrotechnics = probably not the best idea.

In fact I don't think it's the first time I hear of a fire of this nature caused by the exact same thing.

Yeah.

You've never been to a rock show where they use flares and the like?

Those are usually in a large arena, made primarily of concrete and steel. I'm guessing these club fires have a large amount of textiles inside, and limited room. If I were in a club that used pyrotechnics, I'd probably leave. Of course, I don't usually listen to music that needs to generate fake excitement either. Fireworks are a cheap visual gag that adds little to the music. It's the equivalent of dumping sugar on top of your ice cream.

About 2,000 people were inside the club when the fire broke out -- double the maximum capacity of 1,000, said Guido de Melo, a state fire official.

So where were the state fire officials before last night if the place routinely is packed to double or triple capacity?

Meh.

Sometimes its fun to have a few extra visuals going on. Certainly Hawkwind gigs wouldnt be the same without the lasers and 'stuff'. :sneaky:

I just read this and immediately thought of the Great White club disaster. If you search around there is a video with the footage. Seems like the same sort of thing - pyrotechnics inside a small confined area that ignites the soundproofing. People get stuck in the exits trying to escape....really sad
