I do not know if that will be possible. Microprose (where Brian Reynolds and Sid Meir worked) bit the dust a while back and was bought by Infogrames, iirc. Firaxis (the company they formed from the ashes) has an agreement (if they are not owned by) 2K Games.
I downloaded it from Steam also. During install there's an option to create start menu and desktop shortcuts. Go to "my games", right click on Colonization, there's an option to create a shortcut.
I am a bit irritated that there's no PDF manual with the Steam version.
edit--ebgames site has a download for the demo (1 hour limit). The demo includes the manual.

I've played it for an hour. Quite confusing for me to be honest. The map is cramped, all the settlements are really close together. It's disconcerting for a civilization player. Hope you like trading because that's all I've been doing.

For only $25 I picked it up on the way home last night. I didn't get around to it much other than to install and read some of the manual though. I turned it off after starting a game to see what it looked like, starting in the middle of the ocean with just your ship and a couple men was rather odd coming from regular civ games. The graphics look pretty good with high textures as the pov is a bit closer than regular civ.

Wow!!! Steam want $60 (plus VAT @ 17.5%) for Civ 4 Complete and I picked it up from Game for the equivilent of $37. I love Steam, so convenient but I am opposed to paying a significant premium for things. That being said, I have picked up some great specials.
Hopefully their version of Colonization is reasonably priced for the UKers.

So is anyone playing yet?
Spend about three and a half hours last night on my first game. Got into the 1600s, about halfway through the time limit. Playing on new world standard size and that gave me about 8 native factions and 3 other europeans. You have so many things to do with people in your cities thàt as long as you plop down on a decent spot that building up instead of building out is so much more important than in regular civ.

I'm a huge Brian Reynolds fan (of RoN fame) and Civ 4. I never played the original Colonization though. How is the game different from Civ 4? Is it just essentially a mod for Civ 4? Or does it offer all new gameplay?

Yeah it's way different from Civ4. I just got beaten on the second easiest diff level. How embarrassing. Maybe I shouldn't be admitting that here?

Good but if you played the original, theres not much different.
The Map feels smaller. People will tell you that the map is huge, however it feels tiny to me.
Many, many, many more settlements created by native tribes. I decided to test combat out with a few Vet Soldiers and Cannon. Wiped out about 5 towns slowly but surely. Started to wander back home only to find they'd built two new ones. Talk about Baby Boom because theres hundreds of little Braves ready to bash you over the head.
Declaring Independence - Now, this was always difficult in the original. You had to build up your defences hard, pray you could last out long enough to crank in the Liberty Bells and receive reinforcements from another nation. Ive tried to revolt twice and been.... well crushed both times. A hugely disproportionate force plonks itself on the land and proceeds to bombard you until you wonder whether the turn will end this hour or the next. Their troops are superior, their numbers are superior and from what I have seen, there is no option to spawn a reinforcement team like the original.
Overall, its fun. The micromanagement, the menu systems are all the same. Looks a little bland menu-wise but its easy to get the hang of.
Easily worth my money. It pulled me in straight away.
One tip, early in the game when trying to access the wonderful bounty of one of the special squares (like villages in Civ4) I was asked if I wanted to visit the Burial Mounds. Of course I do!!! Theres plenty of loot to be plundered there! Big mistake, Tribesmen went ape on me and I rushed my Soldiers back to base as they were doing my early scouting. Both colonies were undefended 🙂 Saved my backside by 2 turns by offering them peace and 400 gold.

Hard. I'm finding it a difficult game to play. Even on the easier difficulty levels the sheer amount of troops the natives throw at you is impressive. And the home country sends huge waves after you declare independence.
And it's a cramped game. There's native settlements everywhere. Make sure you stock up on a lot of guns because they like to declare war on you out of the blue.
