That's funny. I'm pretty sure prior to moving to FuseTalk AT used vBulletin.
No, it was Ultimate Bulletin Board. For a time Anand pondered moving over to usenet however.:Q

And even before Ultimate, they used WWWBoard

http://web.archive.org/web/199.../http://anandtech.com/

gems, just gems:
The user's manual IBM decided to package with the Deskstar 5 is probably one of the best manuals I have ever seen next to a hard drive, it not only documents the installation and operation of the hard drive in 20 different languages, but it also provides some explanations as to how to partition your new drive, etc... I could find only two flaws with the Deskstar 5 user's manual, and they were just that the manual doesn't use any helpful illustrations to aid first time upgraders with installing the product, and the second flaw being that in one particular place IBM decided to exploit one of my few pet peeves, they referred to hard disk storage space as memory. For those of you that do refer to Hard Disk space as memory, you shouldn't confuse it with RAM, you can call it memory, however it is always better to refer to it at storage space, disk space, or something along those lines. It is a huge annoyance to have someone talk about having 3GB of memory and 64MB of Hard Disk when they mean the exact opposite.

I love it that there are no images on AT. If ATOT allowed imaged the entire forum would turn into 4Chan 2.0 in half a second.

not really you are giving them too much credit. Probably be the same images reposted and reposted along with a smattering of saying 'douche' here and there.

Derek. If/when you move to VB, please leave things they way they are. No custom avatars or pics or any of that crap.

The clean interface is one of the big reasons I've been here for as long as I have.

 Couldn't agree more. Too many forums have the look of MySpace with all the flashing and animation in sigs/avatars. The clean and professional look of this forum is one of the great things about it.

Hear hear.

I'll believe it when I see it. As long as they keep the look clean, with no images, etc., and FFS fix the search.

I agree. They have been talking about moving over to new software for over a year now. I think that they should move over to vB regardless of whether they can transfer the database or not. They could always keep the Fusetalk forums up and running in read only mode if it came down to it.

I like the idea of setting up on vb and then moving the old stuff when they get it figured out.

When we went through the last couple of upgrades, the Mods had access to a test bed of sorts. We were able to post to it and try it out, then report bugs. I don't remember if anything was fixed though.

As long as they keep a nice clean design and don't allow images, custom avatars and that other junk I don't care what they use. I'd sorta suck to lose all the old stuff so hopefully they can manage to transfer all of that over. Where would this forum be without the best joke ever?

I don't see why there is all the hate for images and custom avatars? Many other sites use them with no problems.

Or are you suggesting that ATOT is just too immature to behave itself? :p

Not suggesting it at all. It's a fact.

They should add an option to the users' controls that will enable / disable images and videos on the forums. Default should be disabled. It would be a nice change to finally be able to post images here.

Well this transition should be a site to behold. Whomever has this job I wish the best of luck.
Anyway it'll be worth the trouble & downtime. Users will be empowered.

Only took how many years for one of the best tech sites around to realize that VB is superior?

UPDATED OP with:

Some people are mentioning that pictures would be a welcome addition to this site. The most logical proposal is that the pictures will be disabled by default and will have to be enabled by users. What say you?

Pics in posts I could live with, because the moderators can handle policing that. Pics in sigs would be a very bad thing. Custom avatars I'm kind of ambivalent about... it annoys me when people use animated GIFs.

I know when I did admin work on a forum, I literally restricted banner size in signatures or something along the lines of 450Wx200H with no text and you can have up to 5 lines of text but with each line, you must remove 10 pixels off the height (so at 5 lines of text, your image can only be 150H). Worked fairly well, when I actually was strict enough to enforce someone going over by a mere pixel or two :p. I also believe I didn't allow gifs or flash over 50k or something along those lines.

the move over shouldn't be hard as fuse is well established like VB.

You have a set of users, a set of posts, a set of avatars, a set of sigs, a set of topics, etc. It's all easily containerized. For things that don't have a direct match you set a default.

I'd assume the issues are in how things are "linked" together via UIDs.

I understand it's not just going to be rename a few tables...however; both fusetalk and VB are established in the market. Both want marketshare so the companies write software that can port each over.

I am sure AT has fudged with the code for whatever reasons they had. Still if a person can hit the pages and see things rendered properly you can reverse engineer that to figure what's making it tick.
