Heres the deal: i was watching 24, and my comuter was on, and then all the sudden it turned itself off. So then i tried turning it on, and it lit up, then shut off; tried that a few more times, and same thing.

So i turned the switch in the back off for a while, and then tried it. Everything worked fine, but the monitor turns on, seems like it doesnt detect anything, and then goes into the standby mode which appears when the computer is off but monitor is on. so basically everything powers up, looks fine, everything spins like it should, everything is attached, but the monitor acts as if the computer is not on.

Could this be a MOBO problem? ahh

Reset CMOS and try.

Was the computer doing anything at the time (F@H or anything?)

Any burnt or electronic smell?

Do you have the system connected to a surge strip? Also, any other electronics in the same outlet circuit get affected? Sounds like the PSU had a small hiccup, if not total bust. I'm inclined to think it's either the video card or the motherboard. Try turning the system on with the video card taken out of the system, if the motherboard beeps it's fine as far as the video card is concerned.

No folding, and no smell. I tried to move the cap over the other two pins to reset the CMOS already, no dice. Krn, i had the same feeling, but i figured it wasn't the PSU if everything powered on. Also...the hiccup didn't seem like a PSU related failure, its weird. When i take the power out of the 6800GT (agp) there is a loud ass beep that comes from it; i haven't tried removing it yet, there are no onboard graphics as far as i can tell (i built it myself, lanparty UT 250gb).

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming please.

Ah mmk, well the mobo seems fine if it beeps when there's no vid card in it, try running the system with nothing but the bare essentials and see if it posts. If it does, add components 1 by one till it stops working, one guy in the Computer Help section had every plugged back in and working, maybe the same will happen here.

Jack Bauer infiltrated your computer and disabled your 6800GT, with prejudice.

It's also possible that you lost your monitor. I had a Sony HD LCD that would go to 'sleep' whenever it wanted to ... and finally quit powering up all together.

Unplug DVD/HDD/floppy/etc.
Remove all but one stick RAM.
Clear BIOS (system unplugged obviously).
Try to boot and tell us what happens.

How about a list of your system specs? Its almost sounding like a PSU issue. Sytems don't usssually just power off unless the power has been cut of the PSU is failing or failed.

but everything spins up, turns on fine, and sounds normal. maybe power isnt going into the cpu so nothing is really being output? i have no idea. is clearing the cmos the same as clearing the bios or am i missing something (i think clearing the cmos does clear the bios), and i did unplug the other stuff. i know that at least one stick of ram is corrupt, but its never stopped me before (but has had annoying side effects).

if anyone wants to chime in here about a laptop that i am betting i will have to buy, i would be grateful: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2266799&enterthread=y

Does the system beep when you take all of the ram modules out? If it does, you'll need some known working components or a secondary system to test your parts with. If you don't have either, got a friend nearby who's system you could borrow?
