Very Interesting. Best Case Fermi OC versus (Rather) Easily Obtainable 5870. And they are equal. Pretty much what I thought.

I was thinking 5890 (refresh) vs Fermi with 512 shaders..should be close if Fermi dosen't increase its clocks at all for the next 6 months:rolleyes:.
Looks to me the gtx 480 will hold the single gpu crown for quite a while.

My experience is far from wide-reaching, but for the first time in... well, ever... I feel like my PC experience is sub-par compared to the consoles.

Specifically, I feel like Mass Effect 2 could have had both better graphics and a more PC-intuitive UI; and from what I've read about PC-centric features not being in MW2, I almost start to feel that a console might be a better value. (And believe me, that's a very strange statement for me to make).

ME2 i can agree with. But its typical of SP games, more or less the same. The only advantage for PC version is high res and AA. However, dragon age is a different ball game, on the PC, there are so many mods for it, its definitely much better platform. The same for fallout 3 and general SP RPG or RTS games. PC platform with modding support is superior by far.

MW2 i already mentioned.. its why i didn't buy it for the PC. Paying full price for 5.5 hrs of SP and crap MP support is stupid.

Unigine is crappy benchmark for many reasons (possible nvidia favoring, cruddy use of tesselation, its a benchmark). Metro 2033 has some serious engine problems for some people.

Unigine is a independent benchmark. It's only crappy for cards that can't run it! Tessilation is the future of gaming...where have you been?
And metro runs 2x-8x better on Nvidia cards ,so that means the engine is bad? I guess it has nothing to do with the graphics and physics being advanced? Try again! Just like Crysis.

Good link. It seems that they are pretty equal in that game. The difference ofcourse will be power draw and noise...

Thanks Slowspyder.

Really though...Don't use guys have speakers or headphones? I never play my games without sound..do you? No way can I hear my video card even on 100%(and its loud) when I'm playing a game.

And to me while surfing the web and at idle the gtx 480 is just as silent as any other card.

So who cares about noise at load? ! You won't hear it anyway!

Whatever dude, Guru is a great site, thats total bullshit.

Here is some Metro 2033 benches since AT didn't post them.

5870 and 5850 is getting it's ass kicked in this MODERN game.
Click the resolution tab to see performance in 1900x1080, it gets worse!!!!

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...Fermi-performance-benchmarks/Reviews/?page=13

And the Unigine 2.0 benchmark the 5850/5870 gets it's ass kicked again.
This is another look at the future.

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...Fermi-performance-benchmarks/Reviews/?page=16

.

So tell me how it is BS. You can read their fermi editorial.. they clearly bash Charlie D of SA, claiming he is lying and all that, when it turns out he was spot on. If that isn't bias, i dont know what is. I mean, why should a hardware review site even chime in on rumors when it clearly was being spoonfed by fudge NV marketing numbers?

Metro, good win for fermi. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/03/26/nvidia_fermi_gtx_470_480_sli_review/3 (funny 470 vs 5850 numbers??)

BC2, huge loss for fermi. Dirt 2, pretty close. Generally 10-15% quicker, less at high res. Unigine sold out and put in ver 2.0 with extreme tessellation. Good on them, but no game you will see for the next few years will begin to use tessellation that heavily, by then, all these GPU become irrelevant. Pretty bench is what it is, just a synthetic. Nobody cares.

Edit: As for its loud.. so what why care.. you game with headphones, you win. Most ppl care because they have these things call fancy speakers and subwoofer setups. I bet next you are going to say, so what if it uses so much more power who cares, its so much faster in unigine and metro!! :D

sorry but the gtx480/470 seem way to loud according to reviews. anandtech said it was the loudest card they have tested. hardocp even recorded the sound and it was ridiculously loud. headphones or not that is not acceptable especially since it is still hitting 95C while sounding like a dustbuster.

You did answer my question though. Loud when? When your playing a game right? Will you hear it? I won't. It cant be that loud.

95c was already said fairly normal for a high end card when doing that furmark test. It's in the 80's while playing games and thats nothing new for highend cards. That was already said in another thread.

if I put my fan on 80% I can hear it with headphones on while playing a game and its distracting. my fan on 100% is crazy loud and would drive me nuts. luckily my fan never goes above 45-50% while gaming. I could not imagine having to put up with the noise that the gtx480 makes. reviewers would not be pointing that out if they didnt think it would be an issue. if it doesnt bother you then great but most people would be bothered by an insanely loud fan even while gaming.

Similar to HardOCP.. 480 is only ~10-15% faster than 5870 in Metro.

What happens when the 480 is OC by 10% and the 5870 is OC by 25%?

More interestingly, what happens when the 470 is OC by 10% and the 5850 is OC by 30%?

I didnt expect fermi could even OC much, so 10% is pretty good!!
The GTX 480 is scaling linear to the chip frequency: An 18 percent increase results in an equally big performance benefit. http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...Fermi-performance-benchmarks/Reviews/?page=16

is it possible that we could get a custom 480/470 from someone like MSI or is Nvidia restricting that for now?
My understanding is that the reference BIOS and cooler might change for the retail cards. I'm not sure about 3rd party coolers.

Metro is the game that matters dude, who cares about the other games that they both score over 100 fps.
You can't even run the game with a 5870 at high settings? and barley with a gtx 480.

In other sites the 5870 losses in BF2 and Dirt 2?
Don't know what to say about that.

Unigine sold out with version 2.0?
No they put 3 settings in version 2.0 including a extreme version.
Oh I get it they sold out because the 5870 sucks compared to the gtx 4xx series in tessalation?

Well if you looked closly at the benchmark I link the second Udigine benchmark uses NO tessalation/moderate/normal/extreme (you can choose the setting in the graph) and the 5870 gets is ASS kicked by the gtx 470 in all settings!

So EXPLAIN THAT!

I think the problem is that it's very likely you WILL hear it to the point that it's going to be distracting and annoying while gaming. For some it might not be a big deal, depending on their set up.

Did you watch the Hardocp videos? People here complain about their 5850's and 5870's being annoying, the GTX480 is a good deal louder yet.

surely they would have made that known wouldnt they? I mean if they know its loud enough to warrant a change it seems like having a disclaimer for all those reviewers would have been there so people would know the final product isnt a dustbuster.

Unless they make the retail one cheaper and louder :awe:.

I would bet what they do is shroud the heat pipes better though... how many reviews so far and at least 2 mentions of possible burns. That has law suit written all over it. I know that no one should be messing with it while it is on.. but people are pretty fucking stupid

My guess is something that covers up the scalding bits better with a likely fan profile tweak.

(a) I can still hear the noise of my case fans, even with headphones
(b) some of us have thin walls and don't want to worry about the neighbors when using the PC late at night. As I can hear them brushing their teeth in the mornings I'm pretty sure they would hear that fan.

No I havent seen the video's

I dont know what do they have a pair of Logitec 2 inch speakers with a 400$ video card? Really now?

There is no way in hell I can hear my 5750 with my fan on 100% (and its loud as shit) while I have my headphones on or my speakers on while gaming. No way!
I do have a 7.1 setup with JBL's and dual 10 inch subs but.........:D

You get my point.

1. First point, the 480 is 10-15% faster in Metro. What are you trying to claim here? It's not a huge margin at all. I've seen plenty of reviews with BC2 and the numbers go up and down with wins for 5870 and for 480. The point is they are extremely close. Similar for Dirt2 and other titles, its only winning by the smallest of margins.

2. Unigine, we have known for months that fermi handles tessellation better. Its not news, its a synthetic benchmark, what good will it do for ppl who buy graphic cards to game? It is the future you say? Sure, in a few years. Again, by then will it even matter? NO. The next big thing will be out in 2011 from ATI. No dx11 title this year will have anywhere near the difference you see in unigine.

3. I am not a fanboy. I have bought NV products before and will do so again whenever they can make a good price/performance card. Fermi as it is, is crap for using more power than a 5970 yet only producing tiny leads over a 5870 and overpriced. Defend that if you can.

Yep, that looks promising.

I think 480 GTX would be a good candidate for water cooling or a triple slot air cooler.
I think some of the architecture is there but the chip is too damn big and power hungry in its current form. if it didnt have all that other stuff not related to gaming on there taking up die space and could ramp up the clocks it would be a beast. a die shrink will certainly help but by then ATI will have something new too.

I can barely tolerate my 5850s going at 40% fan speed. Its supposedly quiet but its noisy enough that if i notice it, its annoying. We're talking about a 20 dB difference with the 480. Thats about as different as talking and shouting. Sure if you are single and there's no one around at night when you game, go for it.

(b) If you can't turn up your audio because of thin walls I guess you don't have sex much with the wife? J/K :D

You are reaching, stop bullshitting man there is NO way to hear your fans while gaming, unless you play with relatively no volume.
I have 7 case fans spinning at medium right now and can hear my TV just fine over the fans, in my living room
