I'm generally against user-uploadable avatars. I liked how the old ones were all stylistically similar and the same size and stuff. If it must be done though, please, pleeasssse no animated gifs (as avatars, in sigs or in posts). I hate having to adblock them at other forums.

I like custom avatars, but like you I'm against animation. Animations make the forum page look like a cheesy web site from 2001. I prefer it when the avatars aren't the same style. It makes it easier to remember people by their picture. Size should be easy to regulate so they aren't obnoxiously big or anything.
 
another vote for radiation! I've had that avatar since I joined. My contract upon registering does not allow me to change it
 
Well, my take initially was "custom avatars" means I can upload a JPG, like it does at Rotten Tomatoes Forums. But no, they make you pick just like before. They just have more variety now. BFD.
