It looks like we finally have another widescreen option with the Geforce Go 6600 other than the Toshiba Tecra A4. If you go to the BTO page, there's a link to some benchmarks these guys did. What I especially like about these guys is the fact that they offer Asus notebooks with extended warranties. In addition, this notebook actually supports dual channel DDR2 533 whereas the Toshiba apparently only supports single channel DDR 333 (although the enhanced latency of DDR2 SODIMM's doesn't yield much in terms of performance gains), and the Z71V has a WSXGA screen (1680x1050) whereas the A4 only goes up to 1440x900. Great pricing, too (and they allow you to order it without a HDD, memory, and OS).

Oh yiga hongo.

I was so ready to get a Powerbook and now this.

The price rocks, in particular if you max out the warranty.

Goddamn that page has the most annoying flash animation I have ever seen. I was just browsing but I would never buy from that site just because of that talking lady.

Hm, both shops with custom paintjobs don't only want big bucks for the paintjob (perfectly fine), but also for extended warranty.

Any source of painted Z71V and only paying extra for the paint?

I know, I know, buy a spraycan :)

Ever hear of Mute? I bought a loaded M6N from those guys almost a year ago, and the thing still runs great. The guys at geared2play are top notch, excellent customer service, and great products. This is one of the few companies that i will shamelessly plug on a forum. :p

That shop doesn't allow you to select both a second primary battery together with the optical drive bay battery. Somebody designed that menu without thinking.

Also, I'm pretty sure this machine has gigabit ethernet.

Hmmm....I designed it that way because I had never been asked for both extra batteries and each of the two batteries were available alone in the accessory section. But thank you for the feedback. I'll update it now to allow all the "juice" one wants.

Right now, only the M6NE and M6BNE come with gigabit LAN. Some of the ensembles do as well.

The Z70A and Z70V (which sorta kinda replace the above) also have the gigabit, at least in the Intel/Centrino models.

I've had my z71v for about a week. It's a good laptop, but has some flaws. I got a 1.86 512mb ram dvd/cdrw 60gb 5200 rpm for 1430 shipped from istnc. Pretty nice price for this beast of a machine.
The flaws come mostly from the mediocre screen. It has a bit of light leakage as well as a dark corner on the lower right. Also, there is a sparkle effect, but i'm pretty much used to it now. If you do photoshop work, this laptop will not work for you. It doesn't show up in games. There also was a buzzing noise when it was running off battery power when I first got it, but it mostly went away. The other complaint I had was that they keyboard was not consistent in its key pressure. The right hand home keys were "tighter" than the left side, but I'm either used to it or its broken in. I get around 3-4 hours casually surfing the net/ checking email, pretty good for a laptop of this screen size.

Can somebody describe what the "sparkle" means, exactly? Is that a dynamic thing or something you can put into a screenshot?

actually, with this one the gpu is upgradeable. the question comes down to whether or not Asus will release the modules for it. Hell, i'm for sure gonna pick this beast up before college starts back up in august.

Somebody blew up his GPU while overclocking the 6600.

The z71v clocks the 6600 go below spec, he went above spec.

As a result you can figure that Asus can only release an upgrade if the upgrade stays within the thermal output of the existing one or alternatively if they find a way to cool it better.

No glossy screen option.

I would still like to know what the "sparkle" is. Is that a dynamic thing or something you can put into a screenshot?
