Asus X99/3.1 with i7-5820K - automatic overlock?

Hey guys,

I have recently bought a new computer, as in the thread title. I have no experience with OC.

For cooler, I chose CM 612 v2. During testing with prime95 the AI Suite 3 was showing me "CPU Power" in the range of 140-156W, with frequency being 4GHz. So the first question is ... can the mobo alone overclock my CPU to 4GHz when the turbo frequency is just 3.6 GHz? prime95 found no errors, so an automatic overlock by 400 MHz would be really nice.

I was unsatisfied with the temps the CM was giving me, so I bought a Noctua NH-D15s. During the same prime95 testing, "CPU Power" rose to 180W, with frequency still being 4GHz. So the second question is ... if the clock is the same, why would the CPU consume more power as compared to the first case?

So far, the only explanation I managed to come up with is that the mobo software is showing me bogus information.

Many thanks,
Daniel

More volts = more power.

Example:

The chip might run at 4GHz at 1.3V.

It might also run at 4Ghz at 1.1V.

The 1.3V setting will use more power.

So, your mobo may be applying more voltage than is really necessary to run at a given clock speed.

Hello LTC8K6,

thanks for the information. The question is though, why would the mobo increase the voltage in the second case and not in the first case? Just because it senses that "it can" increase the voltage, lets say based on a temperature reading?

Best,
Daniel

I did as you said, and the TDP is sitting at 1W even under stress:))

Hmm...I don't have Package TDP in the latest version of XTU.

I have:

CPU Total TDP
IA Core TDP

And they change as expected.
