Woot! New hardware to play with.

Have only fired up UT2004 at 12X10 4x16x Hi Q so far, but I can see this thing has the steel cajones!

Bought used with Arctic Silencer installed, like that as well. I am all about OTES solutions.

Benchmarks to come.

Be careful, you do not want to become addicted to silent solutions... Does raise the expense.

I like any kind of "high performance" cooling, appeals to the gear head I used to be in HS I guess.
Trend this year: 5800OTES>5800U FlowFX>bid $700 on CoolFX 6800U> Arctic cooled XT PE (also regularly cooled 6800NU/6800GT/9800Pro)

Definitely a "nVidia" year for me, but 9700P/9800P were in my primary rig 14/15 months prior.

Time to play/bench some games, youngster is sleeping. :)

Doom3
6800NU .................................6800GT.............GT @ NU 325/700 .........X800XT PE
10X7 4X8X 52.9fps .................64.3........... ?????......................................63.3

12X10 0X8X 60.7FPS.................70.4..........62.8
12X10 2X8X 50.6FPS.................61.5..........52.0
12X10 4X8X 36.6FPS.................47.1........37.6.........................................46.6

16x12 0X8X 46.9FPS..................57.6.......49.5
16x12 2X8X 38.4FPS................. 48.1.........40.0
16x12 4X8X 4.9FPS ..................35.7..........28.0.........................................34.2
So the X800XT PE turns out equivalent to the 6800GT in Doom3, which is what I expected. IQ looked very good.

HL2
Nice. I fire up the benches I got here at AT and get a message that the engine build has changed, so no dice. Won't be able to compare to the 6800s, unless someone knows how to update the demos.

Far Cry
System A64 3000+/1 GB CAS 2.5 DDR 400/Ref GF6800 NU/Windows XP Home
Driver rev. 61.45
All Far Cry settings Very High, Trilinear Enabled, default rendering, vsynch off
All demos looped multiple times, not averaged as they were always within 1.5 fps of each other

10X7X32 4X 8X
Research
SM2- 36fps
SM3- 53fps
X800 XTPE 78fps

Volcano
SM2- 61fps
SM3- 67fps
X800 XTPE 77fps

Can't find my 6800GT benches, will keep looking. More to come.

Impression so far- top flight gaming card, nice 2d as well. Installation went smooth, no issues I've found yet. Have played UT2004, Far Cry, Doom3, and HL2.

What I expected all the way around, validation of my oft remarked "X800XT PE vs 6800U- flip a coin."

I'd still probably give the 6800U the nod if I were the type to buy one card to last a year +, just due to more advanced feature set and similar performance, but this would be a close call anyway you look at it*.

*unless you're buying a motherboard, then I'd obviously pick SLI

You have to create new ones. Anand posted some in his blog on 04-Dec: http://images.anandtech.com/re...fe2/rev7_timedemos.zip
I spent Thursday night remaking all of our timedemos (as well as a new multiplayer demo). The new demos are as close to the old ones as possible, but they don't produce 100% comparable numbers (the numbers they produce are a few percent off of the originals).

Holy cr@p - nice performance in Doom3! I didn't expect the X800XT PE to match the 6800GT in that, not with how benchmarks panned out a couple of months ago. ATI seems to have really boosted performance in that one.

I'm assuming you're running the ATI 4.12 drivers, Rollo?

I am not, I am running the 6.14.10.6476 drivers, with High Quality for MipMap and Textures, application preference AA/AF, setting in Doom3.

WOW! very impressive results Rollo, I never thought the XT PE would match the 6800GT in DOOM III.

Try using Catalyst 4.12, I would like to see if there's any improvement according to ATI.

Excellent, thanks for the comparisons Rollo. I need to get myself an ATI Silencer 4 for my X800 Pro. I'm guessing that my case will cool down by 2 or 3 degrees thereby lowering my CPU temp. as well. And it won't be any more noisy than the stock cooler that came with my card (Gigabyte X800 Pro, nice cooler).

Thanks for taking your time to bench but why are you not benching X800XT PE at 1600x1200 4aa/8af? The minimum for X800XT PE should be 1280x1024 4aa/8af. Anything lower is complete waste. No one buys these cards to run 1024x768. If they wanted to run that res, they can save themselves lot of money and stick with Radeon 9700 or 9800. You shouldn't use AA in Doom3 but every other game should be run at 1600x1200 4aa/8af on X800XT PE. If you don't, you're cheating yourself and the card.

Also X800XT PE was always around GT level in Doom3 even before ATI optimizations. One of the first reviews from FiringSquad or Hardcorp showed that. It was X800Pro that did poorly.

Yes Rollo, try the newly released 4.12 finals (non-CCC version). I am finding them to be perfectly stable in a wide variety of games.

Oh, and thanks for posting the benchmarks. Hopefully those who accuse you of being an ATI-hater will shut up now ;)

Congrats...I have been enjoying mine for around 4+ months now. ;)

You should now talk to Viper John and have it Vmodded, like I did. You will be impressed with the results.

Yikes- no thanks! I'm not a rich enough man to risk OCing high end cards! (especially with dangerous techniques like vmods)

I will get the HL2, 16X12 4X8, and 412 driver results up asap though- probably tonight.

Hey, nice card. Can you please bench 3Dmark05 with latest 4.12 drivers, stock settings? Thanks!

Naustica,

It is not my intention to tear your post apart or start a flame-war, but I have differing opinions and experiences regarding your post to Rollo. That said:

The minimum for X800XT PE should be 1280x1024 4aa/8af. Anything lower is complete waste.
True enough about running 1,280x1,024 minimum - but in single player mode. I have basically the same card - check my sig. Yes you get really fast framerates in 1,280x1,024 with everything turned-on - so fast that you really have to be quick and play smart or you get killed playing Legendary in Halo. I mention Halo because it is currently the only game I have installed on my system and play.

Anyway, when you go online and play I guarantee you that will will not be playing at those framerates - framesrates drop substantially in multi-player even in a high-end system. Oftentimes I lower the resolution to 1,024x768. This really doesn't compromise the visual enjoyment much while helping to keep things moving along in heavy firefights.

No one buys these cards to run 1024x768. If they wanted to run that res, they can save themselves lot of money and stick with Radeon 9700 or 9800
You think so? I tell you from experience that while YOU COULD save the money and stick with a 9700 or 9800 if you have a FAST processor there is no comparison. As long as your CPU is not a bottleneck there is a huge difference between a 9700 or 9800 and an X800 XT PE (or X800 XT non-PE for that matter).

I ran my "old" ATI 9800 Pro 256MB on my S939 FX-53 system before I got my X800 XT PE and went (in Halo) from 40fps @ 1,280x1,024 to 84fps at the same resolution (everything on high/turned on except AA and AF). I kept these turned off as there is NO VISUAL DIFFERENCE but a serious performance penalty with these turned on. I think this is due to the way the special effects are rendered but I don't know for sure. This was with Catalyst 4.09. I know Catalyst 4.11 improved Halo as well as some other games (such as Doom 3) as well.

BTW, I only posted 1,280x1,024 as that it is native (and maximum) resolution of my Samsung 172T LCD. Also, I only posted Halo FPS because thats all I have installed on my system right now.

You shouldn't use AA in Doom3 but every other game should be run at 1600x1200 4aa/8af on X800XT PE. If you don't, you're cheating yourself and the card.
If I HAD a 19 or 20" LCD that produced a .264mm dot pitch than I might run a 1,600x1200 but I don't. I am open to Christmas presents, though. Wink-wink.

Aries64,

Based on your use, you're wasting your X800XT PE. You should have bought $200-250 6800nu and saved $300+ and used that money on better monitor.
