seems the x86 operating system was the problem, i have re-installed his pc to win 7 x64 and payday 2 loads fine, havnt tried the other games yet but it looks promising.
would x86 have caused this issue or was it just a case that the operating system had not installed correctly?

By not using official media, youre also dealing with the possibility that someone your hybrid install disk is screwing the installation up.

The short answer is "No one really knows."

i would have agreed with you if i had not already been using the same operating system from the same source installed on my own pc for over 12 months with no problems

All it takes is one missing DirectX library file.

You said his issue was with Payday 2. Did you run it on your PC? Same video card chipset maker (ATi, Nvidia, or Intel)?

ran perfect on mine but i have intel i5 3750k with asus radeon 7770hd where he has AMD fx6300 with saphire tech radeon 7770hd.
seems the re install of the correct x64 operating system has solved the problem but there are still a few more games i have to install and check before i know for sure
