Asus' Sound Manager - Enabling Dolby Digital 5.1?

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but this is what happens, when I run the Coaxial or Optic through the motherboard to the speakers it works fine, Asus' Sound Manager is set to Input and output for both analogue and digital signals so everything works as it should...however there's one problem, I only get stereo sound to my 5.1 speakers.
When playing games, and even in the sound manager I can select 2 Channel to 8 Channel, but that only incorporates the analogue sockets around the back, I'm wanting to enable the Dolby Digital 5.1 option which I can't seem to find, anyone know how?
Funny and weird thing is is that I get full 5.1 when watching DVDs.....

if you are talking about the A8V board in your signature, you will not get true DD 5.1 playback. if you are expecting an indicator on your receiver or unit showing you are playing in 5.1, it's not gonna happen. I can give you technical details but just trust me when i say there is only one or two cards at the most that allow 5.1 playback. The reason being is cards dont have DD encoders. The only possibility is dvd-audio playback in 5.1 which may not be possible either with stock sound. Asus' nforce2 chipset has onboard dolby encoder (by soundstorm) as well as a terratec card. None of the creative sound blasters offers 5.1 encoding.

Not even a digital connection to your card will make a difference. The wiring isn't the problem. Sorry man.

I've always wondered, if you have any non-Dolby Live sound card (so pretty much, anything that ain't soundstorm) and want to take advantage of 5.1 sound in a game for example, and you have Z-5500's, what do you pick? Stereox2? PLII Movie? PLII Music?

It isn't a sound card, I'm using the on board sound, I have read in the manual that it does support DD 5.1 but I've never found a way to enable it...
As for the games, its weird, it picks up hardware acceleration AND my 5.1 speakers, but I lose the rear two (unless its a THX game then it works as 5.1.....weird).

No I think you misunderstand it.

You can get 5.1 sound, but not in dolby digital. If that's the case you are playing in whatever gets coded from your receiver. When I say "sound card" i am also referring to your onboard sound. If you want technical details supporting my arguement, let me know and i'll give you some links. But I hope you can just take my word to save us all a little time 🙂

Well anyway, other than using the "analogue outputs", is there a way to get 5.1 sound via digital out (i.e. optical/coaxial)? I don't have analogue 5.1 speakers :|
