Asus ROG Swift gets updated to 4K IPS

Saw this via Nordic Hardware.

Personally, the Swift becomes less interesting for me. The TN panel was already pretty great in terms of color reproduction, uniformity etc(according to Sweclocker's resident monitor reviewer). Still, going for IPS in 4K is a nobrainer if you are constrained to 60 Hz anyway.

G-sync does make more sense for 4K since it's in the sub-60 fps category where G-sync shines the most. Nevertheless, all of Samsung's upcoming 4K monitors are going to go with Freesync and some of them are going to be IPS. Acer already has a 4K G-sync monitor.

Finally, the monitor is going to ship in H2 2015. Asus doesn't even have a price yet. This feels like a stepdown. Acer's 144 Hz IPS 1440p G-Sync model, for me, is the bigger deal here.

Sounds like Vaporware.

Asus was going to release a 32" 4K IPS monitor in Fall of 2014 for $1750. Never happened because Benq and Acer pre-empted Asus with $899 and $699 releases for essentially the same display.

Now they claim they are going to release a 60Hz G-Sync 27" 4K monitor 2H 2015? Acer, Samsung, Benq, Dell are going to have larger monitors for cheaper again, maybe with Freesync by 1H 2015...so who is going to buy this 2H 2015?

Maybe they should focus on getting the original Swift out of 'Beta' before flopping out another one. I'm interested in this monitor, but I won't even begin to consider purchasing it until 6+ months after release.

My thoughts exactly.

Asus hit it out of the park when Swift was announced; it had so many firsts all at the same time. Since then we saw endless delays and when it finally got released, it was plagued by massive quality control issues.

Now they are releasing this monitor, which basically has no differential selling point, way back in the back of the year for unknown prices.

It feels weird saying, but Acer is finally catching up and even getting ahead of Asus in this area. Maybe their CEO change did quite well for them, after all.

Yeah and that's a massive flop for Asus. They really messed up the trust with the Swift.
I mean, if the monitor is great, if it has very low input lag and a low price, it will be attractive to be sure. But they no longer have the first mover advantage nor even goodwill, as your comment illustrates.

Asus has been listening and replaced the TN panel with an IPS.

I'm interested to know what compatibility is like with G-sync at 4K when using SLI. If it's bad, I'll pass.

You know, I hate to complain when monitors are FINALLY seeing some progression...

BUT for most gamers 4K is pretty much useless. It taxes the graphics card like crazy, while 1440p/1600p still offers enough resolution for any kind of gaming (competitive or not). So right now we're getting a lot of 4K monitors, and we're getting plenty of 27"ish 1440 monitors... But I've had 30" for years now and I'm not willing to go DOWN in size. I still don't get any option for FS/GS in that size that is not 4K. So... still waiting for 30" 1600p FS/GS, and I can't believe I'm the only one.

I realize there've been issues with the ROG in the gaming community, but they're few and far between.

I'm currently using the ROG and it's the best monitor I've ever owned, hands down. No problems, no dead pixels, flawless performance.

This is not a monitor in Beta.

The fact that you have had no problems is NOT evidence about the overall number of problems experienced by the wider gaming community.

Likewise, the fact that others HAVE had problems is also not evidence about the overall number of problems experienced by the wider gaming community.

Only ASUS' RMA department would truly be able to tell the percentage of defective monitors.

Oh and while I'm at it, the term 'beta' only apples to software.

Finally, the fact that this 4k monitor is has the word 'Swift' in its model name and also has the 'ROG' moniker does not mean that the PG278Q is being 'updated.' If it were, it would be called the PG278Q-V2 or something similar. Instead, it is called the PG27AQ.

Not sure why I continue to expect common sense from internet fora.

I researched the ROG before I bought - and I have common sense, so please continue to expect that from this demograph. And yes, there were problems in the community with monitor issues.

But I do not believe they warrant the term "beta release".

I think Acer is killing Asus right now with their monitor offerings. They have the 4K 32" IPS for $900 and the upcoming 1440p 144hz IPS with gsync. I immediately regretted getting the 4K 32" IPS once I saw the 1440p 144hz gsync IPS screen announcement. Back it goes while I wait to get one of those in March.

Asus needs to get it together. The swift launched with tons of low quality panel issues and they offered nothing in IPS with gsync. Acer has executed much better with their offerings. As far as GPU demands, 144hz 1440p is about as demanding as 4K 60hz in my experience.

This is THE monitor I have been waiting patiently for.

Better get my lemonade stand up and running....
