Hi ,
I'm having difficulty installing windowsXP pro using AHCI with my ASUS P5K Deluxe.

I initially installed windows using the the defualt SATA config of Enhanced IDE in the BIOS. But I would like to reinstall to make use of the supposed better performance of AHCI.

When I switch to AHCI mode the following happens when I try to install Windows using a bootable CD with XP pro SP2:

Attempt 1:
1. Booting into windows setup takes approx 5min.
2. Choosing to Setup windows I get an Message saying no Hard Drives Detected setup cannot continue.

I downloaded the drivers for a F6 drive install from the Intel Site.

Attempt 2:

1. Booting into windows setup takes approx 5min.
2. F6 to install drivers
3. Select the relevant device ICH9R (for desktop)
4. Get Confirmation to include drivers.
5.Blue screen . Told to scan the disk and make sure its installed correctly.

Repeated but got same result. Could my SATA drive be too old (Maxtor 120GB) or my SATA controller screwed?

Any suggestions would be appreciated?!

BIOS version 0202. > Gonna update this and see if makes any difference.

Deja-vu, the same thing happened to me last time I tried to install XP a couple of months ago. I eventually gave up on XP and only use Vista right now. Try the new 0501 beta BIOS and Intel released new AHCI/RAID drivers yesterday.

For what it's worth, bios setup on my Intel DP965LT board states explicitly that AHCI only works in Vista. It follows then that trying to use it in setting up XP/Pro is doomed to failure.

We are using AHCI on the Gigabyte 680i board that we have and we are using Windows XP. It has been working flawlessly. Of course the 680i is using the nvidia mass storage manager not Intel's.

Thanks for your input guys.

There were two issues I discovered.
Firstly my SATA boot drive could not be recognised as an AHCI device. It displays in the BIOS but would not be detected on POST.
Second there was an older version of the SATA drivers on the XP CD I was using. When I made a new CD with latest drivers (that I had on the Floppy) the blue screen problem went away.

For now I've decided to stick with Enhanced IDE and use my existing SATA drives until I move to vista or am forced to reiintall xp for any reason.

I just did the IDE to AHCI switch on my P5K deluxe this past weekend WITHOUT reinstalling windows.

I found the solution here: http://www.tomshardware.com/fo...04-30-switch-ahci-mobo

I did option #1. For option #1, you need a way to go from the e-sata connector on the back of the MB to a regular sata connection on the drive. I happened to have an e-sata cable and an e-sata to sata expansion adapter plate. Once I installed the Intel AHCI drivers I then swapped my two drives, set the JMicron to AHCI as well and installed them for the JMicron chipset.

The procedure below is for a P5B motherboard
--------------------
#1 Shutdown the computer. Remove SATA cable from the Intel SATA Controller and plug it into the SATA port of the JMicron controller. Boot the computer after changing BIOS to reflect the changes (Jmicron set to IDE, Intel SATA set to AHCI, set JMicron for boot). Once in Windows, install the latest Intel driver for the AHCI controller. Shutdown the computer. Move back the SATA cable to the Intel controller. Power up, change BIOS to reflect change in boot drive location.

-OR-

#2 With the Intel controller set on IDE mode, go into device manager and locate the Intel controller that the drive is connected to. Right-click and select upgrade driver. Select browse my computer for driver software. Select let me pick from list. In the screen untick the box "show compatible hardward". Scroll down under the Manufactuer column and select the Standard AHCI driver and select next. This should install the Microsoft AHCI driver. (Alternatively, you can install the latest Intel AHCI driver at this time if you have it handy using the "Have Disk" button.) Reboot. Then go into the bios and change your Intel controller from IDE to AHCI. Once your reboot you can then install the AHCI driver for your particular motherboard. This is assuming you are running Vista, I'm not sure if XP has default Microsoft AHCI drivers available.

Either option will work. The first way is nearly fool-proof, but the second way allows you to skip diving into the case and switching cables around.

You're using the wrong drivers for AHCI.
Not the Intel Inf Chipset drivers:
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel%20chipset.htm
but the Intel Matrix Storage drivers:

Put the 2 driver sets on 2 separate floppies, and install both during F6 driver installation.
